The rapid development of computer industry depends on three most important inventions, one is the transistor invented by Bell Laboratories and shockley, the other is the integrated circuit invented by Noyce and Calbi, and the other is the microprocessor invented by Ted Hoff in 197 1 year. Unlike the inventors of the first two products, Hoff has neither enjoyed great wealth nor won any special glory. So far, the inventor has not been fully recognized by the public. But Hoff's invention is so important that he can undoubtedly rank among the greatest scientists in the 20th century.
Hoff has always kept a low profile about his achievements. Because an invisible image is more helpful for him to continue to develop new products. When he described the details of the process of inventing the microprocessor, it was like a student reporting to his teacher that he had just finished his summer vacation. But this humble attitude can't change the meaning of this invention.
The famous Economist magazine called Hoff "one of the seven most influential scientists since World War II". 1978 was promoted to Intel researcher (only two people have won similar titles so far). This means that he has great autonomy in research. He mainly studies all kinds of groundbreaking technical problems, and he likes this challenging job. After completing the microprocessor, he began to develop a language recognition device, which can copy human language and is based on Intel "2920". Hoff and his two colleagues obtained the patent of "Model 2920", namely, Hoff's patentNo. 14. Hoff thinks he is in the right place at the right time: "If we didn't invent the 4004 microprocessor in 197 1 year, someone else will."
1At the end of 982, Hoff announced that he had left Intel for 14 years, which shocked the whole IT community. He said he needed to change his working environment. He accepted the employment of Atari, another Silicon Valley company, as the company's vice president, responsible for research and development. Because Atari intends to push computers to the home, and the consumer market is what Hof is most interested in. But this move didn't go smoothly. 1July 1984, that is, eight months after he joined/kloc-0, the company was sold. Hoff began to do some independent consulting and research work. He turned the garage of his home in Sunnyvale, California into a laboratory. He said that almost anything you want can be made in the garage.
1October 28th, Hoff was born in Rochester, new york. He grew up near a suburban village in Beiqili. His enlightenment education began in a rural school with only one classroom, and a teacher had to teach seven grades 13 students respectively. My father worked in the Railway Signal Corporation. He was an electrical engineer and an enlightener, which made him interested in electricity since he was a child. Hoff's uncle is a chemical engineer. He gave little Hoff a set of chemical experimental equipment and subscribed to popular science magazines, which made him interested in science since he was a child. He once had a "United Radio Directory" and couldn't put it down, so he began to learn electronics. When I was in middle school, I had a soft spot for this course.
