Has Putin signed the counter-sanctions law?

Russian President Putin signed a legal document on the 4th to counter the sanctions against Russia imposed by the United States and other countries. The document was passed by the Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament) on May 22 and approved by the Russian Federation Council (upper house of parliament) on May 30.

The document states that the introduction of this law is intended to protect Russia’s interests, security, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and citizens’ freedoms and rights from unfriendly actions by the United States and other countries, and countermeasures are applicable to The United States and any other country that takes unfriendly measures against Russia, Russian citizens and legal persons, as well as institutions, legal persons and citizens that are subject to the jurisdiction of these countries and directly or indirectly controlled by them and participate in sanctions against Russia.

Countermeasures may take the form of terminating or suspending international cooperation with unfriendly countries or institutions, prohibiting or restricting the import and export of products and raw materials with unfriendly countries or institutions, and prohibiting or restricting jurisdiction by these countries. Or controlled institutions participate in Russian government procurement projects and state-owned asset privatization projects.

According to this law, the Russian government can introduce various corresponding countermeasures. The new law takes effect from the date of signing. In addition, the President will also make sanctions decisions based on the proposals of the Federal Council, and the bill will also be canceled after the circumstances change.
