The brand-new AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR lens is the first lens with aspherical ED glass lens. The lens adopts ED (ultra-low dispersion) glass lens, which can effectively reduce color stripes. Moreover, the newly developed static wave motor is adopted, which improves the scanning speed of AF by about 1.5 times. This time, Nikon also replaced the long-used aperture linkage rod with an electromagnetic aperture, and controlled the aperture through electronic signals from the camera body, thus achieving more reliable exposure control. What about these improvements and the previous generation? What's the difference between 24-70mm f/2.8G? We found a 24-70mm f/2.8G lens and made a detailed comparison. Let's continue to see the results.
Advantages:
1, VR anti-shake system has excellent performance.
2, electromagnetic aperture, more reliable exposure control
3, the newly developed silent wave motor, focusing faster.
Insufficient:
1, and the weight reached 1070g.
2. Dark corners and obvious distortions.

Purchase suggestion:
Overall, the new 24-70mm lens has increased in size and weight compared with the old one. Of course, the price is much higher. So, if you are a professional photographer, your subjects include news, stage, wedding and so on. You need to capture the moment, which requires high focusing speed and accuracy. Then obviously, the new 24-70mm f/2.8E with VR anti-shake, electromagnetic aperture, enhanced focus motor and mechanical structure is more suitable for you. If you are just an ordinary Nikon user, then the old 24-70mm f/2.8G is enough, and the cost performance will be higher.

1, appearance drawing reward:
The new 24-70mm lens has a length of 15.4cm, a diameter of 8.8cm and a weight of1070g.
The nearest focal length is 38cm, the magnification is 0.28x, the aperture blades are 9, and the minimum aperture is f/22.
The lens at the front of this lens is equipped with fluorine coating, which can effectively bounce off dust, water droplets, grease and dirt, making it difficult to be polluted and easy to erase.
The new lens cancels the aperture linkage, and the lens information is completely transmitted by eight metal contacts. After the fuselage transmits the aperture size information to the lens, the lens controls the aperture size through the electromagnetic aperture mechanism to let the light enter the lens. The advantage of using electromagnetic aperture is that it can provide more correct exposure, because the response of electromagnetic aperture is faster. But also avoids the mutual contact and linkage between the two shifting levers, reduces the wear and tear, and at the same time reduces the probability that the lens aperture linkage lever is damaged due to collision.
The VR damping function provides an effect equivalent to an increase in shutter speed by 4.0 steps. There are two modes: normal mode and active mode.
Comparing the old and new 24-70mm lenses, the new 24-70mm lens is on the left. It can be seen that VR anti-shake technology has been added, which also increases the volume and weight of the new lens.
The aperture of the filter is 82mm and 77mm, and the gap is only 5 mm In fact, it doesn't feel very good.
The last lens of the old lens on the right will not move at any focal length. But the new lens will change with the change of focal length, which may increase the chance of dust.
The exterior of the lens is made of plastic. The most obvious difference is the length of zoom ring. The new lens has specially lengthened the zoom ring, which is convenient for the photographer to grasp the zoom ring with his left hand when using it.
The new lens is equipped with VR anti-shake switch, but the old lens is not.
After adding a hood, the new lens is 2 1. 1cm. Although the hood of the old lens is larger, it is still comparable to the length difference of the lens itself,19.5cm.
2, the overall resolution is excellent, and the edge image quality is obviously improved;
In the resolution test, we used D750 equipped with Nikon AF-AF-S Nichols 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR and Nikon AF-AF-S Nichols 24-70mm f/2.8G ED to sample at both ends of 24mm and 70mm respectively, and took 100% enlarged screenshots at the center and edge of the picture for comparison:
▲ Comparison of image quality between new and old lenses at ▲24mm end
At the 24mm end, the new lens has a good resolution when the aperture is fully open until F 1 1 shows enough picture details. Only slightly decreased after F 16. On the whole, although the resolution is lower than the old 24-70mm lens, it still maintains a high level.
▲ Contrast of edge image quality between new and old lenses at ▲24mm end
Compared with the edge image quality, the overall image quality of the new 24-70mm lens is better than that of the old one. The new version of 24-70mm has a loose image quality at the edge of the lens when the aperture is fully open, and it does not show good sharpness until after f/5.6, but the new version is obviously a little sharper than the old version.
▲ Image quality comparison between old and new lenses at ▲70mm end.
At the 70mm end, the new lens has better resolution performance than the old 24-70mm lens when the aperture is fully open. As the aperture shrinks, the gap between the two lenses gradually narrows. In F8, both shots show rich picture details. With the gradual narrowing of the aperture, the imaging quality of the two lenses has declined to varying degrees. Overall, the two lenses have maintained a high level at the telephoto end. Looking closely, the gap is not obvious.
▲ Comparison of edge image quality between old and new lenses at ▲70mm end
Compared with the edge image quality of 70mm, the overall image quality of the new lens of 24-70mm is obviously better than that of the old one. The new version of 24-70mm shows excellent picture details after f/5.6, but the lens of the new version is obviously sharper than the old one. On the whole, there is no obvious difference between the central image quality and the two lenses. At the 24mm end, the image quality of the old model is better than that of the new model. However, the edge image quality and the new lens are obviously improved.
3. When the aperture is fully open, the dark angle is obvious:
▲ Contrast test of dark angle at ▲24mm end
At the 24mm end, the dark angle of the two lenses is still obvious when the aperture is fully open, and the dark angle of the new lens will be more obvious. You can also feel it intuitively in the actual outdoor shooting. It was not until after F5.6 that the dark corners gradually disappeared.
▲ Contrast test of ▲70mm end dark angle
The dark corner still exists at the 70mm end, especially when the F2.8 aperture is fully open. On the whole, there is no obvious improvement in the control of the dark angle of the new generation lens, but the dark angle is more obvious when the aperture is fully open. Although dark corners have the effect of highlighting the subject in portrait photos, not all subjects are suitable for dark corners. If you choose 24-70mm as your hang-up lens, you may need to brighten the edge of the picture later to eliminate dark corners.
4, VR anti-shake effect is excellent:
A major improvement of the new version of 24-70mm is the addition of VR anti-shake, which can greatly improve the success rate of taking pictures in the dark, so that you can take real photos even with a low-speed shutter. The new version of 24-70mm VR has reached level 4, which means that at the telephoto end of 70mm, it is theoretically possible to shoot at a shutter speed of about 1/8 seconds, and the picture is not empty. Next, I used 70mm focal length, different shutter speeds, and shot 100% to enlarge and compare the screen shots to see how the anti-shake effect is.
▲ Anti-shake test
Compared with the actual shooting, it can be seen that the anti-shake effect is still excellent. Therefore, in extreme shooting environment, to be on the safe side, it is recommended that you try to use the shutter speed above the safety shutter, but if the environment does not allow, VR anti-shake is believed to greatly improve the shooting success rate.
5. Distortion control needs to be improved:
On the left is the new 24-70mm lens, and on the right is the old lens. At the 24mm end, the distortion of the two lenses is basically the same, so it is difficult to see the difference.
At the 70mm end, it is also a new lens of 24-70mm on the left and an old lens on the right. From the above picture, we can clearly see that it is better to control the distortion of the old 24-70mm at the 70mm end.
