BYD made Toyota pure electric vehicles, but isn't the technology of Toyota pure electric vehicles good?

With the development of the times, the status of independent brands and joint venture brands is being reversed. In the past, foreign brands came to China to find their own brands, and we gave them OEM production, even the backward technology of joint venture brands, and the independent brands used advanced technology. For example, Dongfeng takes Nissan's technology to build the Qichen brand. At that time, we had nothing but assembly. But now, the situation has changed, and the first-line joint venture brands have to use our technology.

Recently, it was revealed on the Internet that BYD is producing electric vehicles for Toyota, and BYD is responsible for R&D and design. In other words, the pure electric vehicle with Toyota logo hanging on the road in the future is likely to be made by BYD, adopting BYD's pure electric vehicle technology.

Toyota only cares about acceptance, while BYD does all the design, research and development and manufacturing.

According to insiders, BYD will be fully responsible for and independently complete the core technologies of Toyota pure electric vehicles sold in China in the future, such as the underlying technology, electronic control system, motor and battery. Toyota will only be responsible for the acceptance of the vehicle, and then replace the Toyota "Tau" logo for the new car.

Why doesn't Toyota develop pure electric vehicles by itself?

Many people may be curious. Toyota has always had a strong strength in the field of new energy vehicles. Why doesn't Toyota develop pure electric vehicles by itself, but give them to BYD? In my opinion, Toyota is mainly for the following reasons.

First of all, Toyota's current technical direction of new energy vehicles is hybrid power and hydrogen fuel cell power.

Toyota believes that hydrogen fuel cells have a broader market than pure electric batteries. Compared with pure electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells have faster charging time, longer cruising range and lower pollution emission, and are more suitable for large freight vehicles. In the future, Toyota's plan is to use hydrogen fuel cells and solar energy to build a woven city, that is, to replace the energy of the whole city with new energy. Compared with pure electricity, hydrogen fuel cell scheme is more suitable.

But this does not mean that Toyota will give up the pure electric vehicle market. After all, the scale and sales volume of the pure electric vehicle market are considerable now. At present, Toyota has also introduced pure electric Lexus UX300e and other models, and started to lay out the pure electric vehicle market. However, pure electric vehicles are not the focus of Toyota's future efforts, or in the pure electric vehicle market, Toyota's sales gap is very large and needs to be filled.

Secondly, BYD's openness and advantages in pure electric vehicle technology have contributed to the cooperation between the two companies.

BYD has always been an open enterprise, and its business is very extensive, whether it is intelligent electronic equipment, batteries or cars. BYD is also the OEM of Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo while building cars. The blade battery introduced by BYD in 2020 has also greatly improved BYD's pure electric vehicle technology. BYD announced that the blade battery will also be provided to other car manufacturers. At present, it has been determined that the manufacturer using BYD blade battery is Hongqi. Therefore, BYD's openness and advantages in electric vehicles are the basis for cooperation between the two companies.

Is the cooperation mode between BYD and Toyota similar to that between Great Wall and BMW?

In my opinion, the cooperation mode between BYD and Toyota is similar to the beam car established by Great Wall and BMW, but there are some differences. Similarly, the shareholding ratio of the two parties is 50: 50, which is a reciprocal relationship. Secondly, the two sides will give support in R&D and production, instead of the traditional "joint venture model" in which foreign parties provide technology and Chinese production. So the difference is that the joint venture company of Great Wall BMW may use a new brand. The cooperation between BYD and Toyota will still use the Toyota brand.

Then it is not excluded that the cooperation between BYD and Toyota will also use a brand new brand. Because if BYD is responsible for R&D and design, it will be completely different from Toyota's current design system. At the same time, the models produced by BYD for Toyota may have different positioning and pricing from the pure electric vehicles developed by Toyota itself.
