The National College Student Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Social Practice and Science and Technology Competition is sponsored by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and the only national college student subject competition hosted by the Office of the Department of Higher Education. It is one of the top ten college student subjects in the country determined by the Ministry of Education. One of the competitions, it is also one of the most influential college student science and innovation competitions in colleges and universities across the country.
The competition fully embodies the theme of "energy conservation, emission reduction, green energy", closely focuses on national energy and environmental policies, closely combines major national needs, and has received great attention from provincial education departments and universities. The competition works are divided into two categories: "social practice investigation" and "technological production". It encourages college students to conduct in-depth social investigation, discover major national needs, inspire innovative thinking, and form invention patents.

The competition has attracted more than 250 universities from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as some universities at home and abroad, and has formed an international scale with "hundreds of universities, thousands of works, and tens of thousands of participants". The National College Student Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Social Practice and Science and Technology Competition Expert Committee is composed of more than 130 well-known domestic experts and scholars, including academicians of the two academies, 973 chief experts, and outstanding young winners. A certain number of corporate experts are also invited to participate in the selection every year.
