Is BYD's "blade battery" so thin and so long really safe?

If you ask me what is the core of an electric car, I will tell you without hesitation: battery. As the energy source of an electric vehicle, a reliable and safe battery is the core competitiveness.

on March 29th, BYD announced the launch of "blade battery", which has been upgraded compared with the traditional ternary lithium battery and lithium iron phosphate battery in terms of safety, service life and cruising range. At present, the new "blade battery" has been rolled off the assembly line in Chongqing Foday battery factory. It is reported that this battery will be first carried on BYD Han electric version, and the new car is expected to be officially launched in June this year.

As we all know, BYD battery is the foundation of its development. At the same time, BYD is also one of the few automobile manufacturers in China with complete independent research, development, design and production capabilities. The "blade battery" introduced this time is actually a lithium iron phosphate battery. Because of its long and thin shape, it is named "blade".

In terms of safety, the core of the new battery adopts laminated structure and ceramic coating technology, and the Ferrous lithium phosphate material itself has high temperature resistance. Therefore, when the internal short circuit occurs, there will be no violent reaction between the substances, even in extreme cases, only smoking will occur.

In addition, in the layout of battery pack, the blade battery is specially designed for safety. Besides the honeycomb structure guard plate around the battery cell, the in-line arrangement structure+high-temperature insulating ceramic protection+smoke-proof channel make this battery less prone to "fire", and one of its biggest advantages is that it generates less heat and dissipates quickly.

Just talk and don't practice the fake handle style. Previously, BYD officials had conducted "acupuncture" experiments on blade batteries, traditional ternary lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries, that is, when the battery module was charged under certain conditions, a high-temperature resistant steel needle with a diameter of 5mm-8mm was used to penetrate from the direction perpendicular to the battery plate at a speed of (25 5) mm/s, which would lead to a large-area short circuit inside the battery. If the single battery does not explode or catch fire, it is deemed to have passed the safety requirements.

The results of acupuncture test are: ternary lithium battery: deflagration; Lithium iron phosphate battery: no open flame, smoke, surface temperature of 4 degrees; BYD blade battery: no open flame, no smoke, surface temperature 6 degrees.

However, according to BYD's official introduction, this blade battery will only be used in BYD Hanchun electric vehicles at present, and there are no relevant plans for other models. According to BYD's previous application information from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the cruising range of the new BYD Han EV model will reach 65km, and the acceleration of 1 km is only 3.9 seconds. It can be said that it is another "speed" work, and the new car will be officially listed in June this year.
