Peking University School of Medicine, formerly known as the National Beijing Medical College, was founded on October 26, 1912. It was the first national school established by the Ministry of Education of the Chinese government to specialize in teaching Western medicine relying on China’s own strength. On April 3, 2000, the original Beijing Medical University and Peking University officially merged to form the new Peking University. On May 4, 2000, Beijing Medical University officially changed its name to Peking University Health Science Center.
