What is a rickshaw?

"Rickshaw" is essentially another name for "Oriental Automobile", and the name "Rickshaw" originated from 19 13. At that time, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of the public concession issued a decree stipulating that the color of rickshaws must be yellow to distinguish privately owned rickshaws from public rickshaws used for soliciting customers. From then on, "Oriental Car" was called "rickshaw".

Rickshaw is a two-wheeled passenger vehicle which is pulled by human power. Rickshaw was originally called "Toyo Car", also known as rickshaw, which was produced in about 1870. In Tongzhi 12 (1873), Milla, a Frenchman, saw the convenience of rickshaws and planned to buy them from Japan, and declared to the French Concession Office the plan of "setting up a tram passenger service agency in the two concessions".

Milla applied for patent operation for ten years. Later, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of French Concession and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Public Concession, after consultation, agreed that the two bureaus would issue rickshaw licenses and check the distance price. In June 5438+the following year 10, rickshaws were imported from Japan to Shanghai. Because it was imported from Japan, it was also called Toyo car by Shanghainese at that time.

Eliminate "rickshaws"

19 19 After the May 4th Movement, some young people called for not riding rickshaws as part of their "new life", and some of them "vowed not to ride rickshaws on the first day when they arrived in Shanghai, and walked instead". After 1949, rickshaws were gradually eliminated with the rise of tricycles. On March 1955, the last rickshaw in Shanghai was sent to the museum.
