A brief discussion on the charm of composition and color in oil painting
Abstract: I elaborated on my thoughts and understanding of composition and color in oil painting by creating "Fields in the Suburbs". During the creative process, my thesis always revolves around the creation, recording in detail the various problems encountered during the creation process as well as my true thoughts and feelings, which ultimately makes the thesis and creation achieve the effect of integrating text and pictures.
Keywords: The combination of composition, color, text and picture of oil painting
1. Topic selection in the early stage of creation
By chance, I saw the painting located in the office building of the department. The sense of wonder it immediately gave me when I saw the farm vegetable garden behind the building is still fresh in my memory. The scenery is very good. Looking at it, it feels like a natural oil painting in front of you. So I had the urge to use oil painting to express my feelings about it.
This suburban scenery reminds me of some of the feelings in Van Gogh's landscape oil paintings, because I am very fond of the composition and color of Van Gogh's paintings, as well as the oil painting language he used, and the vitality of the brushstrokes themselves. The thickness of the oil paint, the clearly separated lines, and the strong color contrast express the infinite vitality of nature. So I decided to use Van Gogh’s techniques on composition and color in oil paintings to complete my graduation project.
2. The setting of picture composition and the use of color in the middle stage of creation
1. The setting of picture composition in creation
Composition is an important part of the picture. Whether the settings are reasonable or not is related to the effect of the entire picture. I use a square composition method, which is simple and ordinary but strives to be interesting. Because I divide the picture into simple geometric figures and add curved brushstrokes, the effect of the picture is not dull. For example, in the expression of trees, lines are used to express according to the growth trend of trees, highlighting their lush spiritual outlook. The ground plants planned in geometric figures use sinuous lines to express their overall tendency. This allows the gesture of the trees to contrast with the gesture of the ground plants. Houses of different heights are set up at the farthest point of the composition, where the sky and the earth meet, and their curves are used to break the linear horizon and increase the depth of the picture.
2. Problems encountered in the use of color in creation and their solutions
In the early stage of the creative process, I gradually entered the state of painting facing the "fields in the suburbs", but in the Slowly during the painting process I felt that I no longer knew where I was going. Maybe it's because my passion for painting has worn out over time. What I draw now is far away from my original passionate idea. The colors are gloomy and dim, which is not what I originally wanted. Moreover, I found that the colors used in the painting process couldn't help but go the way of using dark colors. When the instructor pointed out to me that the color tendency was not obvious and was limited to my usual colors, I decided to temporarily stop painting, calm myself down, re-examine the motivation and purpose of my original painting, and find a way out of this gloomy color.
Next, I gave up directly facing the "fields" in the suburbs, that is, I put it into my heart and made an impression, using strong color contrast and natural and comfortable brushstrokes based on memory. By virtue of the vitality of the personal brush strokes, the thickness of the oil paint used, and the obvious or hidden lines, the entire painting is immersed in my subjective tones, changing the previous dull and dim colors. The result is bright, happy colors appearing on my canvas. Moreover, I found that the plain and dark brown pigments that I had not often used before could make the painting more mature and deeper, such as the use of blues such as tree trunks and road slopes in my creations; in addition, I combined a pigment with violet or other purples Mixing, as long as there is a little yellow in the color, will produce a more intense effect of yellow, such as the use of yellow tones closest to the eye in the picture. In this way, the overall picture begins to become clearer, and the range of color expression also expands. The colors are bright and the echoes between them gradually become more delicate.
