Gaotangling Town governs 4 administrative villages and 9 community committees, with a total area of ??51 square kilometers, a permanent population of 10,000, and nearly 200 central, provincial, municipal, and district enterprises and institutions stationed in the town. The total population at the end of 2006 was 73,120, including 46,165,438 non-agricultural people. Gaotangling Town is the seat of Wangcheng District Committee and County Government, and is the political, economic and cultural center of the county. The transportation in town is very convenient. The Xiangjiang River has a 1,000-ton wharf that can connect to the sea, Lei Feng Avenue connects the provincial capital Changsha, and the Feldspar Railway runs from east to west. In 2012, the Hunan Provincial Department of Civil Affairs approved the cancellation of the Gaotangling Sub-district Office in Gaotangling Town, Wangcheng District, Changsha City, and Gaotangling Town became history.
