In front of us, we introduced the method of judging the quality of DVD by viewing the manufacturer information of DVD with software, and also told you some manufacturers/brands with better quality. Strictly speaking, however, even the products of big manufacturers are graded, and the quality of similar products varies with the media type ID. The situation of ordinary parts in the market is more complicated. For example, the disc with the code "00 1" is not a product of one production line in one place, so the actual collocation and quality of dyes are not exactly the same, even the material and technology of the base are different. So the code is "00 1", but the quality of the discs is mixed, and the price varies greatly according to the final brand. Some only sell one from 3 yuan, and some as high as one from 8 yuan. We can't judge the quality of these discs only from the manufacturer's information. If you want to judge which discs are good and which are not, the safest way is to do quality inspection of discs.

Quality of DVD burning disc and PI/PIF test

From the application level, the method of judging the quality of DVD burning discs is similar to the method of testing the quality of DVD burner, which can be said to be the same: the same burner, a large number of discs, is to test the quality of discs; A large number of burners and a fixed disc can reflect the recording quality of different burners.

At present, the quality of DVD recording can be measured by FE/TE (focusing error/tracking error), jitter, TA and other tests. However, these methods are somewhat theoretical and idealistic and not intuitive enough. A DVD burner with good quality means good lettering! Good reading! Therefore, a qualified DVD burner must first be able to burn successfully. If it fails, the quality will be out of the question. Next, it is reading. The application of DVD is mainly reading. Therefore, after recording, the fluency of reading becomes the standard to judge the quality of DVD recording. PI/PIF detection must be introduced here.

Basic knowledge of PI/PIF

When data is saved to a DVD disc, the data in the disc will be saved as a block. Each block consists of original data and corresponding check codes. Because of the existence of check code, we also call this kind of data block ECC block, or ECCB for short.

In the DVD recording specification, it is defined that "if there is one byte or more error in a line of ECCB, it is called PI error", which is also called PI error, PIE or PI.

"When the error in a line after PI error correction is still more than 5 bytes, it is called PI- uncorrectable", and PI- uncorrectable is called PIF(PI Failure) in many softwares.

In the process of reading optical disc by optical drive, if PIF appears, it will be handled by PO verification mechanism. If PO recovery fails, ECCB will not be able to read normally. Therefore, in the quality test of DVD recording disc, we require the PO value to be 0.

Quality inspection of CD-DVD speed

In order to make the burned CD read smoothly, the burning quality must be guaranteed. Therefore, the DVD recording specification stipulates the recording quality as follows: the error of ECCB PI for 8 consecutive times cannot exceed 280; PI- uncorrectable (PIF) in ECCB cannot exceed 4. We would like to remind you that in the absence of PO, a PI value greater than 280 and a PIF greater than 4 does not mean that the CD cannot be read normally, but only that the quality of the CD is not ideal.

Nero's CD-DVD Speed provides the quality inspection function of DVD discs. The indicators of this test are also PI and PIF, and the indicator it follows is 280/4. The lower the PI/PIF value, the better the optical disc quality.

It is worth noting that CD-DVD Speed also provides the display of recording quality score, but this score is not very strict, because it mainly depends on the PIF value, especially when the instantaneous PIF is too high, the quality score will drop to 0. But in fact, the instantaneous PIF value is too high, which usually does not affect the smooth reading of optical discs. So this quality score can only be used as a reference. Important data are maximum PI value, average PI value, maximum PIF value and average PIF value.

Test description: Because the evaluation objects are 4×/8× DVD+R and DVD-R discs, and they must be burned at the nominal speed strictly (that is, the nominal 4× disc must be burned at 4×, and it is not allowed to burn at an overspeed or a deceleration), we chose the dual 8× DVD dual burner GSA-4082B as the main burning platform. At present, there is no DVD burner that can handle all the discs at the nominal speed, so if the discs of GSA-4082B can't pass smoothly (for example, 4× can only be burned by 2×), PX-7 16A will be used to burn them to ensure the nominal speed. If the disc can be over-engraved, the speed is limited. Use CD-DVD Speed's "Create Data Disc" function to burn, which is an actual burning rather than a simulated burning, and it will fill the burning disc with 5000 files of different sizes. During the recording process, disks that have failed for three consecutive times will be withdrawn from the evaluation.

After the recording is completed, take the DRW 1 108IM of BTC as the reading platform, and use CD-DVD speed version 3.42 for PI/PIF detection, with a unified test speed of 6×. In the PI/PIF test, discs that report errors twice in a row will also be withdrawn from the evaluation.
