"Mingde Shan Zhi" is taken from "University" in the Four Books and Five Classics. The opening of "University" wrote: "The way of a university is to be well-known and close to the people, and stop at perfection." It means that the purpose of the university is to carry forward the aboveboard morality, make people abandon the old and establish the new, and make people reach the most perfect state.
"Study hard and practice hard" refers to the relevant expositions in The Analects. "Confucius said: learning without thinking is useless, thinking without learning is dangerous." It means reading without thinking is confusing, and dreaming without reading is dangerous. After commenting on these two sentences, Zhu added a dialogue (referring to Cheng Ercheng in the Northern Song Dynasty, namely Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi, the representatives of Neo-Confucianism). "Cheng Zikai: erudition, interrogation, deliberation, discernment and perseverance, one of the five is abolished, and it is not learning." The philosophy of running a school is to survive by quality.
