1988 On July 29th, unemployed Zhu (former actor of Shanghai Peking Opera Theatre, sentenced to three years' imprisonment for 1984 introducing women into prostitution) met Yasuo Kobayashi, Japanese translator of Shanghai Xinhuang Air Conditioning Equipment Company, a Sino-Japanese joint venture, in the antique shop of Jinjiang Hotel. That night, Zhu broke into Kobayashi's residence in Room 370, the new south building of Jinjiang Hotel, pushed Kobayashi down on the bed, strangled him with his hand, snatched 2,000 yuan of foreign exchange certificates and 1 Japanese cigarettes and fled the scene. On August 2, Zhu was captured.
