5 Lindeng Street

Near Harvard Square, where Harvard University is located, there is a short street-Linden Street. No.5 in this street is an antique three-story building, which was originally used as a dormitory. But since the 1970s, it has been the seat of the psychological counseling center of Harvard University.

I did psychological counseling here for two years.

The small building at No.5 Linden Street is the living room as soon as you enter the door, and there are several 19 century-style sofas and coffee tables. There are always several magazines on the coffee table, such as Tombs, Newsweek and Crimson, the school newspaper of Harvard University. Sometimes, a few boxes of biscuits will be put on for guests to eat.

In the corner of the living room, there is a TV. Next to the TV, there is the only thing that can be proud of in this house-a chair of Harvard University in the19th century.

Students who come here for consultation must first register here and arrange the time to meet people. Usually, the receptionist will ask them what special requirements they have for consultants, such as choosing female consultants, ethnic minorities or foreign consultants, or consultants who are good at some special problems (such as anorexia and homosexuality). The receptionist is always friendly to students. They want students to feel at home as soon as they enter the door.

At 5 Linden Street, we only do psychological counseling, not psychotherapy.

In other words, students with personality disorder (such as narcissism), emotional disorder (such as depression) or obsessive-compulsive thinking (such as phobia) will be referred to Harvard University Hospital or other related psychotherapy clinics for treatment.

We are only responsible for general psychological and emotional counseling here. This usually includes counseling on emotional frustration, bad environment, poor interpersonal relationship, improper learning methods, lack of self-confidence, marital conflict, anorexia, bulimia, homosexuality and other issues. Any treatment involving psychological disorders with pathological basis is beyond our jurisdiction.

In addition to providing individual and group counseling for Harvard study, various lectures and reports on learning psychology counseling are held every semester. In addition, we also need to provide professional guidance for Harvard University 10 self-organized student consultation hotlines (including undergraduate and graduate hotlines). Usually every two or three weeks, the counselors of these student hotlines will meet with our instructors to discuss various problems arising from their consultation and receive our professional guidance.

I have my own consulting room at 5 Linden Street.

I decorated it warmly and artistically. I want people to relax and feel comfortable as soon as they enter my home, which is very important for giving full play to the suggestive role of psychological counseling.

When I walked into my clinic, I saw an oil painting of the sea.

In the picture, one side is the waves of the sea, surging and rolling up endless waves; On the other side is a calm coast, full of waves, and the water tide slowly enters and exits. In this dynamic and static contrast, you will suddenly feel the inspiration of the sea to life.

I don't know when this painting was hung here. Although the house changed hands several times, everyone left this painting. I admire the original owner's intentions. He hung this painting in the house, which is really appropriate from the symbolic significance of psychological counseling for personal growth.

Below the oil painting is a big sofa covered with ivory sofa cover, giving people a feeling of peace and tranquility. Opposite the big sofa is a small sofa, ivory sofa cover. Between the two sofas is a small coffee table with a desk lamp and a box of tissues on it.

In the other corner of the big sofa, there is a bookshelf more than one meter high with some of my books on it. I put them neatly and beautifully. There is a pot of chlorophytum on the top of the bookshelf, and the hanging green silk covers a corner of the bookshelf, which seems to have both a sense of vitality and an artistic sense.

Opposite the big sofa, there is my desk. There are desk calendars, stationery and a stone statue of Freud neatly on the desk. When I am tired of writing on my desk, I often look at Freud's statue for a while. Looking at his thoughtful face, I always feel that there is a powerful force that inspires me to explore the infinite mysteries of the human mind.

On the white wall between the two windows, there is a Chinese painting of China that I brought with me. In the picture, two birds perched on a branch and chatted leisurely. Maybe one of them is counseling the other.

The floor of the consulting room is carpeted and light, which makes people feel very warm. The consulting room is cleaned by a special person every day to keep it clean and tidy.

This is my consulting room: quiet, harmonious, warm and sunny, with a little artistic room atmosphere, but not too exaggerated. The creation of this quiet and peaceful atmosphere has important symbolic significance and suggestive function for psychological counseling.

I hope everyone who walks into my room feels relaxed and comfortable. In particular, the implication of the sea, the vitality of chlorophytum, and the whisper of birds have repeatedly become topics for discussion with visitors.

In this room, I always receive more than 200 visiting students. Every time I receive a student, I have an inexplicable expectation and excitement; Every time I send a student away, I feel that a part of myself has gone with him. At the same time, I think a part of him will stay in my heart forever.

In this constant farewell, I feel that my consulting skills are maturing, my knowledge is improving, and my personality is improving.

During the 600 days and nights at 5 Linden Street, I carefully recorded my experience after each consultation. I deeply feel that psychological counseling is essentially the art of human emotional and spiritual communication. Among them, the skills of communication and understanding are higher than any other skills in psychological counseling. And communication and understanding are the source of making people feel good.

At No.5 Linden Street, I also meet with my counselor regularly to discuss the progress of my case and accept his guidance. During this period, I also fell into or experienced, had an epiphany, and sometimes had a heated argument with him. But I must admit that without his guidance, I won't gain much in the understanding and operation of psychological counseling.

Like a wise man in life, he spoke many profound truths about psychological counseling and even human nature in three or two easy words. Whenever I encounter problems in consultation, I always ask myself: What would Du Xun do if he were here? This question prompted me to keep thinking, understanding and keeping up with him.

5 Linden Street is a very humble old house near Harvard Square. Among many modern buildings, it is short, mediocre, old and outdated. However, in my heart, it is so unique and warm.

It is in this house that I learned what is psychological counseling, what is spiritual communication, what is humanity and what is love.

No.5 Linden Street is my eternal holy land of wisdom.

[opinion]

What kind of first feeling should psychological counseling places give people?

1July 994 16, I finally came to Vienna, the birthplace of psychological counseling and therapy industry. I paid a visit to Freud's former residence at Boggarth Street 19, and received his unique charm.

In Freud's former residence, I meditated for a long time, and his famous words repeatedly rang in my ears: "In this room, everything is symbolic."

Indeed, communication in psychological counseling situations is multifaceted and multi-level. In addition to direct oral and body language communication, room layout, furniture color, portrait hanging, sunlight projection and so on. Are sending silent messages.

Psychological consultation is a process of human spiritual exploration, the purpose of which is to let people open secrets, vent their emotions and reflect on their thoughts without reservation. Therefore, the arrangement and layout of psychological counseling places should first give people a feeling of safety, tranquility, comfort and vitality.

This should be the first feeling that psychological counseling places give people.

How does the psychological consultation office create a pure land of mind for people?

When a person is suffering from mental trauma and mental torture, what he needs most is to find a pure land of mind.

Psychological counseling is to provide people with such a pure land of mind. The layout of the room should fully convey this message, so that the newcomers will feel relaxed and relieved as soon as they enter the room, and they will want to pour out their grievances and troubles endlessly and come back to the room constantly.

This is the suggestive function of psychological counseling places.

When I walked into my consulting room, the first thing I saw was an oil painting of the sea. On the one hand, it is turbulence, on the other hand, it is calm, which symbolizes the ups and downs of life and makes people feel vicissitudes. The big and small sofas under it are placed obliquely, so that people can look at each other directly or obliquely when talking.

This is very important for body language communication in psychological counseling.

There is always a tissue box on the coffee table in my consulting room. This is very convenient for the inquirer to wipe away the tears that may flow out when venting personal mental pain, and also allows the inquirer to feel the silent concern of the inquirer. Sofa cover and carpet are all light colors, which can also make people relax. The chlorophytum on the top of the bookshelf is not only an artistic display, but also a symbol of vitality.

Of the two sofas, I usually invite the questioner to sit on the small sofa, because it is facing the Chinese painting of the bird. I want visitors to get the peaceful atmosphere reflected in that painting again and again with unintentional gaze.

These are all to make visitors have a special impression and good impression on my clinic.

This is the "pure land of mind" I created for tourists.

What information should be conveyed by the layout of psychological consultation room?

Since everyone's aesthetic standards are different and the style of house layout is different, how to make the psychological consultation room convey the message of hope, peace, vitality and perseverance is a problem that every psychological counselor should seriously consider.

Don't underestimate the great suggestive effect of the layout of the consultation room on visitors, which is also an important part of psychological consultation.

"In this room, everything is symbolic." Now go back to Freud's saying, do you understand what it means?

Psychological counseling is the information exchange of social orientation.

Psychological counseling tips: How did modern psychotherapy rise?

As a medical method, psychotherapy has existed since ancient times, but people generally regard the establishment of "hypnotherapy" as the beginning of modern psychotherapy.

/kloc-at the end of 0/8, the Viennese doctor mesmer (Franz A? Mesmer, 1734~ 18 15) put forward the theory of human magnetic field, and took hypnotic suggestion as the core means of its magnetic therapy. /kloc-in the middle of 0/9th century, French doctor Shaq (Jean M? Charcot, 1825~ 1893) abandoned mesmer's "human magnetic field theory", but kept his hypnosis technique and cured some hysteria patients. Later, Freud studied under Shack and gradually established his own "psychoanalytic theory" on this basis.

Since then, psychotherapy, as an independent treatment method, has been more and more recognized and applied by people.

Consultation note 1

People live in the feeling of comparing with each other. This comparison will bring people confidence and inferiority. When it brings people inferiority, people should learn to compare with themselves in order to gain self-confidence. In the following consultation notes, I helped a female classmate who was carried away by inferiority to regain her confidence, mainly because she learned to compare with herself.
