Why does the "room" in Epang Palace read Pang?

The mainstream view is that we should pronounce páng gūng, and the ancient "A" refers to the winding place at the foot of the mountain. There is no objection to the pronunciation of "A". And "room" is "side", so it's time to read páng.

The origin of the name

Afang was originally just the name of the front hall of the palace. Qin Shihuang intends to "give it a name" after the whole palace is completed. Due to the large scale of the palace, although hundreds of thousands of coolies participated in the construction work every day, it was still not completed until the demise of the Qin Dynasty. In this way, people call it Epang Palace. Why is this palace called "A Fang"? There are different opinions in the past dynasties. The main points are as follows:

The first view: Ying Zheng, king of Qin, lived in Handan City and fell in love with a Handan woman named Afang. After Qin Shihuang unified the world, he wanted to marry her, but he was opposed by all the ministers because she was Zhao's daughter. Epang hanged himself in order not to embarrass Ying Zheng. In memory of the woman he loved deeply, Qin Huang named Epang Palace.

The second view: Afang is named after the palace site is close to Xianyang. "Ah, it's near, so it's near Xianyang. It's called A Fang."

The third view: Afang is named after the shape of this palace, and it is called "Four Arabian Lights". Ah, in the ancient sense, it can also be interpreted as giving in, giving in, giving up and so on. The architectural structure of Afang Palace is "coiled, arched and twisted", which embodies the style and characteristics of "four rooms and wide rooms".

It is precisely because of this architectural style of Epang Palace that when explaining why this palace is called Epang Palace in Historical Records of Qin Shihuang, he said: "This palace is famous for its shape, and it is said that its palace is wide on all sides."

The fourth view: Epang Palace is called because it is high and steep. If it is on Ashang, it is a house. This view comes from the biography of Hanshu Jiashan, in which the annotation says: "A Zhe, a great Ling Ye, was named Afang, which means A Shang is the residence." In other words, Epang Palace is named after the palace was built on the top of Daling. According to archaeological excavations, Epang Palace was built on a very high platform, as described in Hanshu.

The fifth view: The Annals of Chang 'an is interpreted as "A" because the palace is adjacent to Shan Ye and unknown, so it is called A Fang first. This statement comes from Historical Records, which says that Gong Cheng will be named before Afang is completed.

Extended data:

Afang

"Fang", that is, "Acheng". Located on the rammed soil foundation of the front hall of Epang Palace, it is the external wall of the front hall and its affiliated buildings, built in front of the front hall. When the pedestal of Afangshan Qiandian was rammed, fences were built in the north and east and west.

Subsequently, the generous and solid Beiyuan became the foundation for building "Afang". At the western end of the ruins of the front hall of Epang Palace, there are villages called "big ancient city" and "small ancient city". Its location shows that Acheng is outside Qian Dian and inside Epang Palace.

The reason why Acheng has walls on three sides and no walls on the south is related to architectural skills and political situation. From the engineering point of view, it is an important principle to arrange reasonably and improve timeliness. The building "Acheng" is one of the contents of the design. It is not only the process before "A Fang", but also convenient for on-site management.

"There is no wall in the south" means leaving a passage for people and things. When "Afang Qian Dian" is completed, the gate is completed and the south wall is closed. Unfortunately, in the troubled times at the end of the Qin Dynasty, the Epang Palace project was forced to be abandoned, and naturally there was no south wall.
