Call of science and technology: what is variable aperture technology?

Samsung Galaxy S9/S9 Plus adopts a new technology called Intelligent Variable Aperture. As the name implies, the aperture of the main lens is no longer fixed like the previous mobile phone, but can be adjusted in size, which brings the advantage that it can cope with more extreme photo scenes and shoot better picture quality.

Although the pixels are the same as the previous generation, the camera of Galaxy S9/S9 Plus is almost completely upgraded. The aperture of this machine up to F 1.5 is second to none in the industry. Coupled with the super-pixel photosensitive element with optical anti-shake, the dark light shooting performance of Samsung Galaxy S9/S9 Plus is almost unparalleled in the same class of mobile phones.

However, not only that, although the pixels of this brand-new photosensitive element are the same as those of the previous generation, its structure has changed greatly, because a dynamic memory is added under the photosensitive layer, and its appearance provides the possibility for the short-term explosive growth of image data capacity, thus realizing the synthesis of 12 frames of photos and the ultra-slow motion capture of 960 frames of video.

Comments: The aperture of the camera refers to the size of the opening where light enters the camera and reaches the sensor. The aperture is measured by f-stops, and the focal length is divided by the size of the opening. The smaller the aperture value, the wider the opening, allowing more light to reach the sensor, while Samsung Galaxy S9/S9 Plus will be able to switch two openings with different sizes.

2. Why is the iris included?

Because the image sensor of a smartphone camera is smaller than that of a SLR camera, it is very important to increase the amount of light recorded by the sensor if the smartphone is to continue to pursue higher image quality. Under the condition of low light, the performance of smartphone camera is obviously in the most unfavorable position; You may have observed very noisy night photos yourself.

Samsung may improve the effect of night and low light by letting more light enter the sensor. In order to minimize the potential aberration or image distortion, such as lack of clarity, blur or flash, a very wide aperture must be balanced with excellent lens design and manufacturing.

In the case of sufficient light, the possibility of image overexposure is equally important. Although lower ISO and higher shutter speed help to offset the overexposure of large aperture, they will limit the shooting options and may even fail to expose the image correctly. The second smaller aperture setting limits the light entering the sensor, which is a more flexible solution and can kill two birds with one stone. This is an essential function for serious photographers.

Comments: Because the mobile phone sensor is very close to the lens, the field of vision is very wide and the depth of field is not very shallow. However, the artistic shooting effect has appeared recently, which is considered to be the greater attraction of the dual-camera system, just like Apple's recent iPhone, rather than the dual zoom capability of the telephoto lens.

3. How does this variable aperture work?

Samsung's variable aperture technology seems to work in almost the same way as traditional variable aperture cameras. The image we see from W20 18 points to a miniaturized version of the traditional overlapping aperture blade to control the size of the opening. This is a completely mechanical technology.

However, Samsung's implementation is not to move between the maximum and minimum sizes to produce a series of aperture settings, but to be limited to two different settings, f/ 1.5 and f/2.4. It is not entirely clear why there are only two kinds of apertures to choose from. Miniaturization technology may have some limitations, which makes it more feasible to switch the variable motion of blades than in large cameras.

For small size, when the incremental size changes, it may not bring huge performance difference, but it becomes obvious only when the maximum and minimum openings are changed. This may also be the decision of the software, because it is not easy to hand over the control of the aperture to most users who are familiar with the click convenience of smartphones.

Comments: Although Samsung GalaxyS9/S9 Plus has only achieved two-speed aperture adjustment, it undoubtedly provides a new idea for the improvement of mobile phone camera technology. Next, if the stepping motor can be miniaturized and small enough to fit into a miniature camera, it may be possible to realize multi-step aperture adjustment similar to that of a camera on a mobile phone.
