Interpretation of KTM 1290 Super Adventure R New Patent

KTM has applied for a patent for the new low-swing saddle tank, and the illustration shows that it will be used for the new 1290? Super? For adventure. KTM is 790? Adventure? A similar design was first introduced on R, and then applied to 890 and 390? Adventure model. So you can naturally see 1290? Super? Adventure has a similar design.

The illustration contained in this patent was submitted in the German Patent Office in May, which shows two drawings of the same motorcycle, with and without fuel tank cover and seat respectively. As shown below, the engine seems to be 1290? Adventure's 75 V twin-cylinder engine, its frame and sub-frame structure are similar, but there are some changes. Here, we use the engine and the rear rocker pivot as a common reference point, because this gives us the closest comparison.

The fuel tank is located at the top of the frame and follows the frame, and then extends forward to the bottom of the radiator. This will form a heat dissipation opening on the car body behind the radiator. The subframe looks very new, with a new seat design and a redesigned rocker arm.

After removing the fuel tank cover and seat, we can see more engine and frame parts, and the seat looks lower than the 2020 model. This does not necessarily mean that the seat height will decrease, because we use the engine instead of the wheel position as the reference point. However, the height of the windshield is significantly higher than that of the 2020 model. We can only see one side of the headlight, but we hope it will have a new design to adapt to the adaptive cruise control of the Bosch radar unit. KTM was discussed in 1290 before? Super? Adventure? S, so it is not surprising to see it on the 202 1 model. There should be a backward radar unit for blind spot detection.

Patent illustrations show Pirelli Scorpion steel spoke wheels with obvious marks? Traces? Two tires. Patent drawings show that the tire label is a bit unusual, but Pirelli is 1290? Super? Adventure? S's spare tire No engine rod means that the drawing is S model, but S will have cast wheels, and R model will use steel spoke wheels.

The fuel pump is located at the bottom of the left tank, and the fuel level gauge is located at the bottom of the right tank. The hose is connected to the two oil tanks at the bottom to help keep the oil level on both sides equal. Most patents relate to the structure of the fuel tank, especially how the left and right main fuel tank bodies are connected to the top unit where the fuel filler cap is located. The advantage of this design is that the center of gravity is low, but the width is narrowed because it extends downward, rather than downward to the side like some large adventure travel models.

Figure 16 shows how the fuel is injected into the two main fuel tanks and how the air in the fuel tanks is exhausted. Most of this patent relates to the venting of storage tanks. When the gas storage tank is full of gas, it is necessary to exhaust air somewhere. Each half of the storage tank has two exhaust pipes, and the lower main pipe and the lower secondary pipe are equipped with valves. When the water tank begins to fill with water, the air is discharged through the following pipe. Once the fuel reaches the height of the downcomer, the gas begins to fill the central storage tank (# 17). When fuel is continuously added, the valve on the auxiliary pipe will open, so that the air at the top of the oil storage tanks on both sides will be exhausted and the fuel in the oil storage tanks will flow out.

The patent also mentions an interesting aspect of the filler cap: it can be electromagnetically locked without using a key, but the cap can be locked or unlocked remotely. Normally, KTM usually releases new models on EICMA, but since there is no large motorcycle exhibition this year, foreign media expect KTM's new models to be announced later this month.
