What is foam glass?

Foam glass (foam glass)

Foam glass (foam glass)

In 1930s, France Saint-Gobain Company successfully developed foam glass with calcium carbonate as foaming agent for the first time, and applied for the patent of 1935. Subsequently, in 1939, the former Soviet Union also produced foam glass in the pilot plant of Mendeleev Institute of Chemical Technology.

Foam glass was first invented by Corning Company in Pittsburgh, USA. It is an inorganic nonmetallic glass material made of broken glass, foaming agent, modification additive and foaming accelerator. Fine grinding and mixing, high temperature melting, foaming and annealing. It consists of a large number of uniform bubble structures with a diameter of 1 ~ 2mm. Among them, the sound-absorbing foam glass is more than 50% open-cell foam, and the heat-insulating foam glass is more than 75% closed-cell foam. The product density is

perform

Foam glass is a lightweight and high-strength building material and decorative material, which has excellent heat insulation (cold preservation), sound absorption, moisture resistance and fire prevention performance. Its service temperature ranges from-196 to 450 degrees, and the life of Class A noncombustible materials is the same as that of buildings, with a thermal conductivity of 0.058 and a moisture permeability of almost 0. Although other new thermal insulation materials emerge one after another, foam glass plays an increasingly important role in low-heat insulation, moisture-proof engineering, sound absorption and other fields because of its permanence, safety and high reliability. Its production is the reuse of waste solid materials, and it is an example of protecting the environment and obtaining rich economic benefits.

Lava foam glass: natural lava or industrial waste residue such as perlite and obsidian are used as basic raw materials, and a certain amount of glass powder can be added to reduce the foaming temperature, and mirabilite is used as foaming agent to make foam glass. Generally, it can be used as insulation materials and wall materials for buildings and industrial equipment.

Three advantages

1 non-toxic, non-radioactive, will not release harmful substances, will not pollute the foundation and groundwater, is an environmentally friendly material;

2, non-combustible, low hygroscopicity and water absorption, and wide use temperature range. The practical use temperature of ordinary foam glass is 240 ~ 280℃;

3, not easy to weather, not aging, not bitten by rats, insects and microbial corrosion;

4. By changing the formula and foaming process, the properties such as bulk density, open porosity and closed porosity can be adjusted;

4 application fields

Foam glass is a kind of porous inorganic nonmetallic material, which is made of waste flat glass and glass bottle by high temperature foaming. Fireproof, waterproof, non-toxic, corrosion-resistant, moth-proof, non-aging, non-radioactive, insulating, anti-magnetic, anti-static, high mechanical strength, and good adhesion to all kinds of mud. It is a kind of heat insulation, sound insulation and waterproof material with stable performance for building exterior walls and roofs.

According to reports, foam glass can also be used in thermal insulation projects of flue, kiln and cold storage, thermal insulation, waterproof and fire prevention projects of various gas, liquid and oil pipelines, places that need sound insulation equipment such as subways, libraries, office buildings, opera houses and cinemas, isolation and sound insulation projects for infrastructure construction, and leak-proof and moth-proof projects in rivers, guardrails and dams. It even has the function of cleaning and health care at home. Compared with traditional protective materials, foam glass can reduce heat loss by about 25%.

Foam glass, also called porous glass, is filled with countless openings or closed holes. The area of pores accounts for 80%~90% of the total volume, and the pore size is 0.5~5mm, and some are as small as several microns. The main raw material of foam glass is usually broken glass, and acidic volcanic lava substances can be used, such as volcanic ash, pumice, perlite, obsidian and blast furnace slag.

At present, foam glass is rarely used in China. It is a new material and can be used as energy-saving window glass or thermal insulation material for building envelope.
