Xi 'an University of Science and Technology has a long history and profound foundation. The history of the school can be traced back to the Department of Mining and Metallurgy, School of Engineering, Beiyang University, which was founded in 1895. 1938 moved to the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Northwest Institute of Technology, 1957 merged into Xi Jiaotong University, 1958 independently established Xi 'an Mining Institute from Xi Jiaotong University. It was one of the only two five-year undergraduate colleges under the former Ministry of Coal Industry at that time.
1998 the school implements "joint construction between the central and local governments, with local management as the main task" and is assigned to Shaanxi province. 1999 was renamed Xi Institute of Science and Technology, and in 2003 it was renamed Xi 'an University of Science and Technology.
The school was established with the approval of the former people's governments of state administration of work safety and Shaanxi Province, and the education and training plan for outstanding engineers was implemented by the Ministry of Education.
National construction postgraduate high-level universities, national characteristic key discipline universities, central and western basic capacity building engineering universities, high-level universities in Shaanxi Province, and "first-class universities and first-class disciplines" universities in Shaanxi Province. In 2004, the school won an excellent grade in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level by the Ministry of Education.

Since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan", it has undertaken more than 5,000 scientific research projects, including more than 270 national-level projects such as major national science and technology projects, "973" and "863", national science and technology support programs, national natural science foundation and national social science fund. The total contract amount of scientific research funds reached 800 million yuan, and it won 7 national scientific and technological progress awards, more than 200 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological awards and more than 2,400 patents.

The school is one of the founders of the project "1+2+ 1 China-US Talent Training Program", and has jointly carried out two Sino-foreign cooperation projects with university of tasmania and Macquarie University.
The school and American universities jointly launched the "1+2+ 1 China-US Double Degree Program", and carried out more than 30 short-term exchange study programs with universities in Malaysia and other countries and regions, as well as the "paid internship program in the United States". The school has enrolled doctoral, master and undergraduate students from 1 1 countries.
