Shaanxi University of Science and Technology is a multidisciplinary university established by the central and local governments and featuring light industry. Historical evolution and development changes The school was founded in 1958 as Beijing Institute of Light Industry. It was affiliated to the Ministry of Light Industry and was the first light industry higher education institution in New China. In 1970, it moved to Xianyang, Shaanxi Province and was renamed Northwest Light Industry College. In 1978, it was designated by the State Council as one of the 88 key universities in the country. In 1998, the school was transferred to Shaanxi Province and implemented a system of central and local government construction and local management as the mainstay. In 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Shaanxi University of Science and Technology.
