Some shipbuilding companies have successively built and delivered sixth-generation deepwater semi-submersible drilling platforms, with working water depths of 3,000 to 3,600 meters and drilling depths of up to 11,000 to 15,000 meters.
Among them, the "Haiyang Shiyou 981" has been in service in the South China Sea and has achieved gratifying results. In addition, the world's first cylindrical deepwater drilling and oil storage platform, drill ship and floating production and storage ship (FPSO) built by our country's shipbuilding companies are all high-end products.
“The rapid expansion of offshore engineering equipment manufacturing capabilities is the main reason why China surpassed South Korea in 2014 and became the largest international market share of global offshore engineering equipment.” Huang Pingtao said that after the outbreak of the international financial crisis in 2008 , many shipbuilding companies have transformed and developed offshore products. So far, more than 20 companies have taken orders for offshore engineering platforms, and about 100 companies have taken orders for offshore engineering ships.

Although low-end equipment has completely independent design capabilities, the design and construction capabilities of high-end equipment still lag behind those of Europe, the United States, South Korea, Singapore and other countries.
From the perspective of independent design and general contracting capabilities of offshore engineering equipment, except for a few companies that have independent intellectual property rights for the design and construction of jack-up platforms and can carry out basic designs, most companies mainly adopt foreign designs. . The core technologies of other operating platforms such as semi-submersibles basically rely on foreign countries, and the main standards are controlled by others.
Most companies intelligently manufacture low-end products. Even companies that can manufacture high-end products do not have independent supporting capabilities. Some products do not have independent intellectual property rights and require high patent fees.
In terms of offshore engineering equipment and supporting equipment, my country has a certain foundation in offshore engineering supporting equipment technology and has the ability to produce some products. Due to its higher technical performance and reliability requirements and special requirements for installation and maintenance, its research and development and industrialization are difficult.
At present, most of the various functional modules and power, machinery, chemical, fluid flow, and electronic control equipment rely on imports, and the independent design and manufacturing capabilities of underwater production systems are very weak.
With the support of the national “863” program and special projects such as the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Ministry of Science and Technology, the research and development of supporting equipment for offshore engineering equipment in my country has also made certain progress recently.
The domestic dynamic positioning system (DP3) passed the offshore real-ship test and acceptance, the country’s first 3,000-meter deepwater blowout preventer prototype was successfully developed, and the 3,000-meter water depth drilling riser joint technology made a breakthrough. However, it will take some time for these results to be put into practical use.
