1. Suzhou Museum
Designer: Pei Luming
The design of the new museum combines the traditional Suzhou architectural style and places the museum in the courtyard. space to harmonize the building with its surroundings. The main courtyard of the museum is an extension and modern interpretation of the architectural style of the Humble Administrator's Garden to the north.
The new museum courtyard, the smaller exhibition area, and the courtyard in the administrative area break away from the traditional landscape design ideas in the landscaping design, and the new design idea is to find new ideas for each garden. Orientation and theme, the essence of traditional garden landscape design is constantly excavated and refined to form the future development direction of Chinese garden architecture.
Although the whitewashed walls will become the main color of the new museum to integrate the building with Suzhou’s traditional urban mechanism, the same gray small green tiles on the sloped roofs and Window frames will be replaced with gray granite in pursuit of a better uniformity of color and texture. The museum's roof design is inspired by Suzhou's traditional sloped roof landscape - cornices and meticulous architectural details. However, the new roof has been reinterpreted and evolved into a new geometric effect. The glass roof will complement the stone roof, allowing natural light to enter event areas and museum exhibition areas, orienting and inviting visitors. The structural system of the glass roof and stone roof is also derived from the traditional roof system. The past wooden beam and wooden rafter frame system will be replaced by a modern open steel structure, woodwork and paint roof system. Metal sunshades and nostalgic wooden frames will be used extensively under the glass roof to control and filter the sun's rays entering the exhibition area.

The museum architecture and innovative gardening are mutually dependent. I.M. Pei designed a main courtyard and several small inner courtyards with an exquisite layout . Among them, the most unique one is the northern courtyard on the central axis, which not only allows visitors to see the characteristics of the Jiangnan waterscape through the lobby glass, but also directly connects the courtyard to the Humble Administrator's Garden through the north wall, integrating the old and new landscapes.
It is said that the setting of the main courtyard located in the north of the central hall was the most painstaking one for I.M. Pei. The main courtyard is surrounded by the new building on the east, south and west sides, and adjacent to the Humble Administrator's Garden on the north. It occupies about 1/5 of the new building's area
. This is a creative landscape garden carefully built on the basis of classical garden elements. It consists of a pond covered with pebbles, a rockery, a small straight bridge, an octagonal pavilion, a bamboo forest, etc. It is different from the traditional gardens of Suzhou, but it does not deviate from China. Humanistic atmosphere and charm. The landscape garden is directly connected to the supplementary garden of the Humble Administrator's Garden across the north wall. The waterscape starts from the northwest corner of the north wall, as if water is diverted from the west of the Humble Administrator's Garden. Under the north wall is an original stone rockery. When asked why he did not use traditional Taihu stone, I.M. Pei once said that traditional rockery art can no longer be surpassed. A master who innovates throughout his life is unwilling to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors. This unique landscape of "using the wall as paper and stone as painting" presents a clear outline and silhouette effect. It makes people seem to be connected to the Humble Administrator's Garden next to it. The old and new landscapes are connected and cleverly integrated. This integration in the urban mechanism is also reflected in the design of 1 to 2-story commercial buildings on the north side of the Northeast Street River, the connection between the entrance square of the new building and the Northeast Street River; The Wumen School of Painting Museum is integrated with the Ethnographic Museum area, retaining the original "Miss's Building" on the west side of Prince Zhong's Mansion (located in the south of Bunyuan and at the north end of the administrative office area) as a restaurant and tea house; the only tall magnolia in the new site is worthy of preservation. The tree was also designed by Mr. Bei and placed appropriately in the southeast corner of the front yard.
2. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Designer: Lu Yanzhi
The memorial hall has rolling eaves and the glazed tiles used are exquisite and beautiful. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall chose the sapphire blue glazed tiles that Dr. Sun Yat-sen loved most during his lifetime as the main color. It cannot but be said that a lot of painstaking efforts were taken. In 1963, the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall underwent a large-scale renovation. Royal blue glazed tiles were customized from Shiwan, Foshan, Guangdong, and the roof tiles were re-covered. The renovation was carried out while retaining the original pattern.
The cloud and water patterns on the eaves, the decorative patterns on the brackets, the bell-shaped iron horses on the eaves, and the "d" graphics on the beams are also full of national characteristics. In repairs, the methods of renovation are traditional, but the materials are modern. In addition to regular patching and coloring, the paintings outside the memorial hall are also protected with siliconized waterproofing agent, which is like putting a protective film on the outside. The interior of the hall uses new paint that is mildew-proof and moisture-proof, and some materials are even imported to ensure better protection for the paintings.
The five huge rectangular tassel-embedded glass bronze chandeliers hanging under the eaves of the main entrance of the memorial hall are all made of pig iron except for the glass. Even the tassels hanging down from the sides and bottom are also made of pig iron. .
The colorful ceramic pavement tiles and exterior wall decorative matte tiles used in the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall were pioneered by the former Shanghai Taishan Brick Co., Ltd. and became one of the first patented products in China. Beautiful and dignified, natural and simple, durable, with unique effects of sound absorption, light absorption, frost resistance and never fading, it is known as "Taishan Brick". Like the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the Shanghai Tower, Shanghai International Hotel, Jinjiang Hotel, Shanghai Youth Association, and Tianjin Zhanghua Southeast Asia built before liberation all used this high-strength wear-resistant tile.
Looking down from the air, the memorial hall has a protruding umbrella-shaped structure. The blue bricks and blue tiles symbolize the blue sky and white sun designed by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. It is really eye-catching.
