Sea rice (saline-alkali-tolerant rice) refers to rice varieties that can grow in saline-alkali land with salt (alkali) concentration above 0.3%, and the yield per unit area can reach above 300 kg /667 square meters. Sea rice is a kind of rice between wild rice and cultivated rice, which generally grows in tidal flat area and has salt tolerance. Compared with other common rice, sea rice has stronger survival competitiveness, and has the abilities of waterlogging tolerance, salt tolerance, lodging resistance, pest resistance and so on. 1986, Chen Risheng, a researcher at Guangdong Ocean University, discovered the first wild sea rice in Zhanjiang, and applied to the former Ministry of Agriculture for a patent for a new plant variety, named "Haidao 86", which was appraised by Academician Yuan Longping as another major revolutionary breakthrough in rice industry after hybrid rice.
