In 1957, the German meddlesome Wankel manufactured the world's first rotary engine and obtained the patent right. Wankel did not leave this technology at home, but licensed it to several automobile manufacturers. On the one hand, he wants this technology to be more widely popularized, on the other hand, he wants to further improve the technical content of rotary engines with the help of everyone's wisdom. However, the good times did not last long. The oil crisis has dealt a fatal blow to many car manufacturers, forcing them to give up this expensive project.
At this time, Mazda Company, which was in the rising stage, became interested in rotary engines, reached a technology transfer agreement with Wankel on 196 1, and became the new owner of this technology, and established the rotary engine research and development division on 1963. Three years later, Cosmo Sport, the first production car equipped with 10A rotor engine, began to be sold in Japan. Since then, Mazda has been committed to the improvement and perfection of this technology, and successively launched twin-rotor engines such as 12A, 13A, 13B, 13B-REW, which proved Mazda's loyalty to it, and this loyalty has exceeded 40 years. At the same time, in a sense, the rotary engine has almost become a symbol of Mazda brand, just as the pneumatic suspension device is inseparable from the Citroen brand.
