Who invented the escalator?

Charles Seeburg later improved Wheeler's scheme and obtained a patent at 1892. 1900 or so, the world's first escalator was installed in new york Elevated Railway Station. 1922, Otis Elevator Company obtained the patent of escalator, and developed a new design scheme, combining the concepts of flat step and grooved pedal, and designed a slightly corrugated slope, so that passengers who take the elevator can safely lift their feet off the pedal.
