Affiliated to China National Nuclear Corporation, it is China’s only integrated nuclear reactor engineering research, design, and It is a large-scale comprehensive scientific research base that integrates testing, operation and small-batch production; it was praised by Chairman Wu Bangguo as “the cradle of China’s nuclear power engineering”.

The China Nuclear Power Research and Design Institute was founded in 1965. It is a national strategic high-tech research and design institute integrating military and civilian services. From 1967 to 1969, it was placed under the jurisdiction of the Second Ministry of Machinery (Ministry of Nuclear Industry). The institute gradually relocated from Beijing to Sichuan; in 2010, the second phase of Ling'ao Nuclear Power Station, the first independently branded Chinese improved pressurized water reactor nuclear power technology CPR1000 nuclear power unit that participated in the design, was officially connected to the grid for power generation.

According to the official website of the Nuclear Power Institute in January 2017, the China Nuclear Power Research and Design Institute has more than 2,400 professional and technical personnel of various types, and more than 1,900 intermediate and senior engineers and above. The institute has established more than 90 laboratories, including 2 national key laboratories and 2 national energy R&D (experimental) centers, involving more than 50 engineering majors and disciplines.

According to the official website of the Nuclear Power Institute in January 2017, the China Nuclear Power Research and Design Institute has 65 master's degree supervisors and 29 doctoral supervisors. China Nuclear Power Research and Design Institute has won more than 1,500 scientific research achievements at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, and obtained more than 100 authorized patents.
