The CNKI renewal fee is nearly RMB 10 million. Is it okay for universities not to renew?

? Regarding the CNKI renewal issue, I would like to share my personal opinion for reference only.

? In my opinion, it is perfectly fine for universities not to renew their subscriptions.

? The reason why I said "you can not renew" is not purely due to the high subscription fee. The subscription fee is inflated and you are not used to the problem of price increases. This is of course okay. Because funding for universities does not come from strong winds, scientific research funding must still be spent wisely. There are several more important reasons:

First, colleges and universities can look for similar substitutes. Colleges and universities have two tasks, one is teaching and the other is scientific research, both of which have to deal with journal materials. Among the various types of modern scientific research data, CNKI only provides one point of journal data, but it is not the only point. There are many other points, and substitutes can be used. For example, among the databases provided by the state, the author is currently using the Philosophy and Social Sciences Database (full name: National Philosophy and Social Sciences Academic Journal Database). The author originally used CNKI, but later gradually switched to the database provided by this country, which is free to use. I believe that more and more countries will provide such free and exclusive resources. What's even more gratifying is that this free resource is even richer.

? I also discovered a phenomenon recently, that is, information from the 1980s can be found on this national platform, but not on CNKI. What I am talking about are facts from my own experience. The information I checked is about the famous female poet Ni Ruixuan in the Qing Dynasty, and the title is "On the Poet Ni Ruixuan in the Qing Dynasty". Recently, someone said in an article about Ni Ruixuan's research that only two articles involving Ni Ruixuan were found on CNKI, but no special research articles on Ni Ruixuan were found. It can be seen that the resources of CNKI are still limited. Especially some time ago, some people came forward to defend their rights and received compensation. Perhaps CNKI removed many unauthorized resources in order to avoid suspicion. A few years ago, I found some articles I wrote on CNKI and spent money to download some. "You spend your own money to download your own articles" is a normal phenomenon for CNKI. It is also criticized and is also its risk point. Of course, I don’t write many articles myself, and I have never thought about protecting my rights. However, a recent search on CNKI revealed that all of my articles that were once online have been taken offline. I think this is not an isolated phenomenon. From this we can also see that its resources should be discounted.

? Second, universities can make full use of the rich data resources of national and local comprehensive libraries. The digital libraries I commonly use now are the National Digital Library resources, as well as the digital library resources of this province. The resources here are very rich. Basically it can meet the needs of college students for study and research.

? Of course, not renewing may not be the best option. Knowledge is a special commodity. Sellers and buyers can think about the problem from a "win-win" perspective. For example, merchants do not need to make huge profits at all. Instead, they need to make steady profits and make small profits but quick turnover. They can sign long-term cooperation agreements with preferential prices; they can allow universities to communicate with each other. Establishing a data sharing alliance means that universities can join forces to purchase data sharing and so on. As long as we sit down and have a good talk, it's better than Jiang Taigong fishing for a willing person and taking the bait!

? Let me reiterate, the above is just my personal opinion! Regarding this issue, it is purely a matter of opinion and everyone has different opinions. Everyone is welcome to exchange opinions!
