1. Content Overview
This new drill bit (Figure 1) has two technologies pending for patent application: an improved sealing system and a more precise hydraulically designed bearing system. The conical sealing gland is its core technology, which ensures the best sealing position and sealing interface. A heat shield disc is added between the sealing port and the end of the bearing to prevent damage to the sealing port due to overheating. By reducing the variation range of bearing clearance and adjusting the bearing area, a stronger plain bearing is designed that can support heavy loads. Another improvement is the lubrication compensation device, which is designed with an automatic chip removal reservoir that can reduce the residence time of cuttings downhole and protect downhole drilling tools.

2. Application scope and application examples
When increasing the drilling speed, energy is continuously applied to the drill bit, which will generate energy inside the drill bit. Additional stresses are created on the parts and can lead to problems downhole. Varel International has developed the HighEnergy series of roller cone bits to meet the demands of drilling operations by achieving greater efficiency through heat dissipation of bit parts and more effective hole cleaning. The company produces a series of products that can withstand high energy input while maintaining high penetration rates and increasing footage. In Tarrant County, Texas, the United States, a drilling company used High Energy cone drill bits. The average speed reached 10.52m/h, which was 29% higher than the previous drilling speed. The drill bit effectively drilled 681.8m.
