The name of Fudan University is taken from "The sun and the moon shine brightly, and Fudan University comes" in "Shang Shu Da Zhuan". It was founded in 1905, originally named Fudan Public School, and renamed Fudan University in 1917. It was independently founded by the Chinese ’s first institution of higher learning.
The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the Fourth National Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine founded in 1927. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University. Currently, the school has 11 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art. In 2017, the school was selected into the list of "double first-class" construction universities, establishing With 27 "double first-class" construction disciplines, it is a world-renowned and domestic top comprehensive research university.

In recent years, Fudan University has signed cooperation agreements with more than 270 universities and institutions in more than 40 countries and regions around the world.
