VDP takes full advantage of EMC Avamar's code to provide enterprise-class stability and deduplication through a backup solution specifically designed for small and medium-sized environments. VDP uses patented variable-length deduplication algorithm, which can achieve more than 90% efficiency. For example, I backed up 100GB virtual machine in the lab environment, but these backup data only consumed 9.8GB of actual storage space on VDP hardware devices.
Advantages of VDP include:
Can quickly and efficiently back up and restore VMware virtual machines;
For all backup tasks, the patented variable-length deduplication technology is used uniformly, which greatly reduces the demand for disk space for backup data;
VMware vSphere API(VADP) and Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for data protection can be used to reduce the burden on the vSphere host infrastructure and minimize the backup window requirements;
The whole virtual machine recovery (or "image-level" recovery) and file-level recovery (FLR) can be realized without installing an agent in each virtual machine;
Using virtual device format parameters simplifies deployment and configuration;
You can use the vSphere Web client program for management.
Checkpoints and rollback mechanisms can be used to protect devices and data;
With the VDP recovery client based on Web, end users can easily recover Windows files and Linux files.
