The Historical Background of Five Good Soldiers

From 1950s to 1970s, there was a vigorous movement in the history of China People's Liberation Army to be "Five Good Soldiers". This activity lasted 12 years, which had a great impact on the historical process of military construction and development.

The Historical Background of the "Five Good Soldiers" Movement

1958 in April, the third national youth congress was successfully held in Beijing. Deputies of the People's Liberation Army attending the National Youth Congress gathered together and decided to issue the "Proposal for the Evaluation of Developing Five Good Things" to the youth of the whole army.

Subsequently, the People's Liberation Army Daily published this proposal with the title of "Developing Five Good Appraisal". The proposal caused great repercussions in the whole army, and all units responded one after another. In order to make soldiers learn by example and have goals, many troops have also selected the first batch of "five good" individuals and "five good" classes, platoons and companies, and set up a number of "five good" pacesetters. In all units, especially grass-roots companies, challenge books, challenge books and determination books were plastered all over the walls, which soon set off an upsurge of being more energetic, more advanced and creating "five good" and inspired the enthusiasm of the commanders and soldiers of the whole army to carry out revolutionary competitions.

In order to carry out this mass activity deeply and persistently, on May 12 of that year, the General Political Department issued the "Instructions for the Company to Carry out the Five Good Movements" to the whole army. It is required to carry out a lasting mass movement among soldiers with the goal of "five virtues" put forward by military representatives attending the third National Youth Congress. Under the leadership of party committees and political organs at all levels, the whole army quickly launched the "five good" movement. 1September 1960 to 101October 20th, the Central Military Commission held an enlarged meeting in Beijing. The meeting fully affirmed the "five good" movement carried out in the whole army. Decided to continue this campaign among the youth of the whole army, and absorbed Lin Biao's idea, and changed the original "five virtues" into: good political thought, good military technology, good March 8th style, good task completion and good physical exercise. Since then, these five contents have become the standard for the whole army to evaluate the five good soldiers.

197 1 year, Lin Biao and its counter-revolutionary clique were completely smashed. The army criticized Lin Biao's ultra-left line in the army. The movement of "Five Good Soldiers" was used by Lin Biao during the Cultural Revolution, and many "Left" things were stuffed into it, which led to serious deviation in this movement. Thus, the "Five Good Soldiers" movement, which lasted for 12 years, ended.

The "Five Good" campaign was put forward in April 1958 and implemented in all units of the whole army in May. During the three years from 1958 to 1960, the "Five Good" badge has not been found. During this period, the army may mainly issue "five good news" and report commendation. The official movement of the whole army to become the "five good soldiers" should have started after the enlarged meeting of the Central Military Commission held in Beijing on 19601October 20th. 1962, the first batch of official badges of "Five Good Soldiers" appeared.

The badges of the "Five Good Soldiers" in this period have been improved in design and technology, and most of them have no portraits of Mao Zedong.

The badges of "Five Good Soldiers" in the army are issued by the headquarters of major military regions, arms and services, units at the corps level and the Political Department in their respective systems in a unified manner of specification, production and inscription. Soldiers wear it to prove their "five good" status and enhance their sense of honor and responsibility. The "Five Good Soldiers" badges made in this period are small and exquisite, simple and generous, and rigorous and standardized. Jerry-building rarely happens. Most of them are in the shape of a five-pointed star and a national flag, supplemented by a small number of circles and ellipses, which embodies the characteristics of the military emblem. The main material is aluminum, followed by copper and plastic.

The author has a sample of "Five Good Soldiers" with the inscription on the back: "Beijing Badge Factory-made sample". It can be inferred that all major military regions and services have gone through a set of procedures of "sample trial production, effect evaluation, approval, mass production and unified distribution".
