It evolved from Anshan Iron and Steel Research Institute established by 1964 in Anshan, Liaoning. A series of R&D supporting platforms with pilot base groups as the core have been formed. Pilot production lines such as new technology for comprehensive utilization of vanadium-titanium ore resources (unique in China), selective chlorination of blast furnace slag at high temperature to produce titanium tetrachloride (unique in the world), high-quality titanium-rich material (unique in China) and clean production process of vanadium oxide (unique in China) have been built.
Over the years, the main task of Panzhihua Iron and Steel Research Institute is to carry out original, digestion, absorption and innovation research around the comprehensive development and utilization of vanadium-titanium magnetite resources in Panxi, to carry out forward-looking, strategic and basic research projects around the development strategy of Panzhihua Iron and Steel, and to carry out technical research and technical services around the urgent task of production and operation of Panzhihua Iron and Steel. The research institute is the research and development center of new vanadium and titanium technologies, new steel products and new metallurgical processes in Panzhihua Iron and Steel Company, the gathering center of high-end talents in Panzhihua Iron and Steel Company, the incubation center of high-tech and the exchange center of Industry-University-Research cooperation.
