The center was named the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Blood Transfusion by the World Health Organization in 1988. In 1999, through an interest-free loan from the Finnish government, a 16-story comprehensive business building with a construction area of ??20,000 square meters was built and equipped with advanced professional instruments and equipment. The Shanghai Blood Center is responsible for providing clinical blood and ensuring safe blood use for 160 medical units in the city. In addition to setting up 13 fixed blood donation points, the center also parks mobile blood donation vehicles on the streets of downtown to provide blood donation services year-round. Nearly 280,000 units of blood are collected every year, and about 800,000 units of blood and blood component products are supplied to the clinic. The blood component separation rate is over 96%, and the clinical blood component transfusion rate is 99%, reaching the international advanced level. At the same time, the center also provides blood transfusion-related services such as identification and matching of difficult blood types, examination of neonatal hemolytic disease, identification of transfusion reactions, diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis, and tissue matching. In addition, the center is also a training base for the "Shanghai Designated HLA Tissue Matching Laboratory of China's Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Database" and the "National Basic Immunology and Hematology Course". It is also a clinical teaching base for Shanghai Second Medical University. It also cooperates with Fudan University graduate students The institute and the School of Life Sciences of East China Normal University jointly established a graduate training base. The center always takes blood safety as its highest purpose, ensures blood quality as its primary responsibility, focuses on blood donors and blood recipients, strictly implements relevant national laws and regulations, industry standards and technical operating specifications, and became the first blood transfusion center in China in 1999 The industry took the lead in establishing an ISO quality management system. In order to promote the development of blood transfusion research, the center established the Shanghai Blood Transfusion Institute in 1985. A special fund of 1 million yuan is allocated every year for the development of blood transfusion research. The institute has 5 research laboratories and 12 researchers with senior and deputy professional titles. Over the years, it has applied for 120 funding grants for various scientific research projects, including 2 National Natural Foundation of China, 6 national patents, 1 invention patent, and 1 utility patent.
