Scientific research achievements of Institute of Metals, Chinese Academy of Sciences

From 1985 to 2008, the institute of metals won more than 400 scientific and technological awards, including more than 60 national third prizes (15 technological invention award, 28 natural science awards and 18 scientific and technological progress award). During the Ninth Five-Year Plan period alone, it won the national prize 12 (3 prizes for technological invention, 4 prizes for natural science and 5 prizes for scientific and technological progress), among which "Discovery and research of quintic symmetry and Ti-Ni quasicrystal phase" broke through the traditional crystallographic theory and won the first prize of national natural science; "Development and popularization of porous air-cooled casting first-class turbine blades" and "Research on new materials, new processes and new technologies of down-the-hole drilling tools in metallurgical mines" have obtained important applications and great economic benefits, and both won the first prize of national scientific and technological progress.

By the end of 2003, Metal Institute had applied for patents 10 19, and granted 480 patents, of which about 3/4 were invention patents and14 were utility model patents. During the period of 1997, Institute of Metals, Chinese Academy of Sciences awarded doctoral and master's degrees according to the first-class discipline of materials science and engineering. In 2003 and 2006, the first-class discipline of materials science and engineering of Institute of Metals ranked second in China.
