Toyota hybrid vehicles have recalled 752,000 vehicles worldwide. Has hybrid technology come to an end?

A few days ago, Toyota Motor announced that it would recall Toyota Prius and Prius V worldwide due to safety defects in the hybrid system, which is expected to cover 752,000 Prius worldwide. However, since the Prius has no large-scale sales in China, the recall does not involve the China market.

1 The recalled model is a Prius manufactured from 20 13 to 20 17.

Toyota officially recalled 20 13 to 20 15 Prius models and 20 14 to 20 17 Prius V models. The reason for the recall is that the hybrid systems of the two models may have defects, and they will not be able to enter the safe driving mode in case of system failure. Toyota said that when the vehicle cannot enter the safe driving mode, it may lose power and turn off the engine, especially when driving on the highway, which may easily cause safety hazards.

According to reports, Toyota's recall will involve 752,000 Prius, including 267,000 in the United States. Toyota said that it will repair the faulty vehicle for free, and if the transmission of the vehicle is damaged due to the fault, it will also be repaired and replaced together.

American oil price is not high, but it is the biggest market for Prius.

Because the Prius equipped with Toyota hybrid system conforms to the "zero emission policy" proposed by the United States, the United States has also become the world's largest market for Toyota Prius. From the listing of 1997 to 20 17, the cumulative sales reached 4 million vehicles. Although the oil price in the United States is not high, the Prius has achieved great success in the United States due to policy reasons. At that time, FAW Toyota introduced the third-generation Prius to China, but the actual sales proved that the Prius was not suitable for the China market, with an annual sales of only a few hundred vehicles, and finally it had to stop production.

3 The sales volume is large, and the Prius is also the hybrid model with the largest number of recalls.

Prius is one of the earliest hybrid models listed in the world, so the global sales of Prius are very large. However, the Prius is also the hybrid vehicle with the largest number of recalls. According to statistics, in 20 15, the Prius recalled 625,000 vehicles due to motor control software failure. In 20 18, 2.4 million Prius were recalled worldwide due to flameout. In 2020, 270,000 cars were recalled due to brake pedal failure.

Judging from the problems of several recalls, the Toyota hybrid system carried by Prius often has power interruption and braking system problems.

4 Hybrid is only a transitional technology? Will it be eliminated after the era of pure electricity?

Although the power of Japanese cars is not excellent, it is really true to save fuel. Toyota's hybrid system is really excellent in fuel economy and has a leading edge in technology. However, we also know that there is a tendency for pure electric vehicles to replace hybrid vehicles. The cruising range of pure electric vehicles has generally reached more than 500 kilometers. In terms of hybrid power, major automobile manufacturers generally adopt a 48V light hybrid system, and do not make the hybrid system as complicated as Toyota. So like Toyota, there are not many brands that use hybrid systems. Toyota has also opened patents related to hybrid technology, but not many manufacturers are willing to maintain a camp with Toyota.

At one time, whether the hybrid vehicle is a transition to new energy development has been debated endlessly. With the development of pure electric vehicles, the advantages of hybrid vehicles seem to be gradually replaced by pure electric vehicles. Therefore, how long Toyota can persist in the future depends on the cruising range of pure electric vehicles and whether the charging efficiency can completely replace fuel vehicles.
