What is methyl propylene glycol?

methylpropylene glycol is a colorless and transparent liquid with low viscosity.

It is miscible with water, methanol, ethanol, butanol, propylene glycol, propylene glycol monomethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, acetone, carbonate lactone and styrene, but insoluble in cyclohexane, hexane, toluene and xylene. At about -54℃, the viscosity increased and no obvious crystallization appeared.

allyl alcohol was obtained by isomerization of propylene oxide in industry, and then methyl propylene glycol was synthesized by hydroformylation.

methylpropylene glycol is a diol with low molecular weight and high boiling point, which contains two primary hydroxyl groups and side methyl groups. It is liquid at room temperature, easier to measure and pump than neopentyl glycol. It is a diol with easy operation and wide application range, and has been popularized by companies such as Lyondell in recent years.

it can be used to manufacture unsaturated polyester, liquid saturated polyester, thermoplastic polyester resin (modification of PET and PBT), alkyd resin, polyurethane resin, diester plasticizer, lubricant, etc., as well as cosmetics and medicines. The obtained polymer has the characteristics of low viscosity, low melting point, low temperature resistance and weather resistance.

In the field of polyurethane, it is used to produce polyester polyol with low crystallinity and can be used as chain extender. Its application fields include synthetic leather slurry, polyurethane coating, polyurethane adhesive for food flexible packaging and so on.

methyl propylene glycol is almost non-toxic and non-irritating to skin and eyes, and has been approved by FDA. Acute oral toxicity value LD5 > in rats; 5.g/kg, the toxicity value of rabbit percutaneous absorption LD5 >: 2mR/kg。
