What is patent insurance?

Patent insurance means that the policy holder takes out insurance from an insurance company based on authorized patents. During the insurance period, the insurance company shall compensate the policy holder for the investigation expenses incurred in protecting the patent rights as stipulated in the contract. This insurance is used to cover litigation expenses incurred when defending one's own patent rights or defending against alleged infringement of others' patent rights. Patent insurance is still a new type of insurance in the country. At the beginning of 2012, eight cities including Beijing were selected as pilot cities for patent insurance across the country. In November of the same year, the State Intellectual Property Office officially approved the second batch of patent insurance pilot projects in 20 regions including Fuzhou. What is currently being launched is patent enforcement insurance, which covers claims except patent infringement. Currently, the importance of patent rights as an intangible asset is increasing day by day. Patent insurance not only reduces the business risk of an enterprise to a certain extent, but also protects the important patent assets of the enterprise to obtain the benefits it deserves under the patent system, enhance the enterprise's own competitiveness, and promote the healthy development of the enterprise.
