1974 teachers from Tsinghua, Peking University, Harbin Institute of Technology and other universities were transferred to set up mechanics teaching and research department, 1980 set up rheological mechanics research group, 1984 set up rheological mechanics research institute, 1985 was approved by Hunan provincial government, and the organization and establishment were formally determined. Rheological mechanics was identified by 1982 as a key discipline in colleges and universities in Hunan province and by 1994 as a key construction discipline in "2 1 1" province. Postgraduates in Rheology 1982 began to enroll students, and Master of Rheology 1986 was awarded. 1998 the state adjusted the discipline and specialty, and the master of rheology was renamed as the master of general mechanics and mechanical foundation, and in the same year, the doctor's degree was awarded. 200 1, Xiangtan university was identified as a key discipline in Hunan province. Under the leadership of Professor Yuan, with the joint efforts of all comrades and the strong support of relevant leaders and departments, the discipline of rheological mechanics has made great achievements. After more than 30 years of discipline construction, the discipline has formed a strong academic team and an academic school with its own research characteristics, which has a certain influence in the world and a certain academic status in China. In particular, his work in the theory of material failure is outstanding, and he has his own research characteristics, creating such branches as "rheological fracture" and "defective rheology". Theoretical research attaches importance to interdisciplinary and multi-scale research. This theory highlights the combination of rheology and damage, rheology-temperature effect-viscosity-dissipation, and emphasizes the combination of macro-fine/nano-micro. Before 200 1, it was supported by five national natural science foundations and 1 China-US Joint Natural Science Foundation. Establishing the failure theory of rheological materials combining macro and micro is a world-leading work from theory to practice, with high academic value and wide application range, which has been recognized by colleagues at home and abroad. The key project of the National Natural Science Foundation "Material Failure Theory of Rheological Objects with Defects" passed the project acceptance organized by the National Natural Science Foundation on 200 1. The expert group believes that the achievements made by the research group are innovative and international frontier in the study of material failure mechanics of rheological objects with defects, which not only has important basic theoretical significance, but also has broad application prospects. The research results have reached the international advanced level and the comprehensive evaluation is excellent. Since 200 1, this direction has made research progress in two fields: multi-scale theory and macro-fine-micro model. Professor Yuan is one of the main founders of China Rheology Society, and participated in the formulation of 65438-0978 national rheological development plan. 65438-0984, the national symposium on rheology was held in Qingdao, with Hunan University as the keynote teacher. More than 70 people from universities and research institutes all over the country participated in it, which played a positive role in promoting the development of rheology in China. In 2005, the 4th Pan-Pacific International Conference on Rheology was successfully held in Shanghai, with Hunan University as the first organizer. This conference is the largest and highest-level international academic conference on rheology held in China so far. Eight Chinese and foreign academicians and four editors-in-chief of international rheology journals, including Professor K.Walters of the Royal Academy of Sciences, attended the meeting. Hunan University sent more than 20 people, mainly from the Institute of Rheological Mechanics, to participate in this activity. The minutes of the meeting were published by American Science Press. In 2008, Hunan University, Central South University of Forestry and Technology and Hunan University of Technology jointly hosted the 9th National Academic Conference on Rheology, which was held in Changsha. The Institute of Rheological Mechanics of Xiangtan University pays attention to strengthening international exchanges and cooperation, has visited and participated in more than 50 international rheological conferences abroad, and invited more than 30 foreign scholars to visit and give lectures at the Institute of Rheological Mechanics of Hunan University. Professor Yuan and Professor Yuan attended the international conference on concrete fracture in the United States in 1987 and the international conference on rheology in Australia in 1988 respectively, and introduced the rheological fracture theory for the first time in the world, which aroused great interest of the participants and expressed their willingness to cooperate. During the period of 1988, Professor S.Zahorski, Professor S.E.Swartz (then President of American Society of Civil Engineering) and Professor K.K.Hu, members of Polish Academy of Sciences, visited our institute to give lectures, and signed an agreement on scientific research cooperation between the two sides. The research cooperation project between Xiangtan University and the University of Kansas in the United States is jointly funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of the United States. At present, the Rheology Institute has reached a cooperation intention with the National Wood Products Institute of Canada, and plans to conduct long-term scientific research cooperation in the application of nanotechnology to high-quality wood.

Under the careful guidance of the older generation of rheology experts, a group of young and middle-aged rheology workers have grown up rapidly. At present, Professor Zhang Ping's research group has devoted itself to the research of "new technology for direct preparation of polymer-based nanocomposites", "inorganic-biopolymer nanoporous materials" and "photocatalytic nanoporous materials", and achieved a series of achievements, among which "Nylon 6- silica nanocomposites and its new technology for direct preparation" won the national invention patent (ZL02 139836.4). Since Professor Luo 1999 won the first China Rheology Youth Award, Professor and Professor successively won the second China Rheology Youth Award in 2002 and the third China Rheology Youth Award in 2005. In 2004, at the invitation of Professor Ruan Wuqing, Professor Luo went to the School of Engineering of the University of Quebec, Canada for a one-year cooperative scientific research. In 2005, Professor Luo was sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Learning and invited by Professor Tomita, President of the Japan Materials Society, to work as a researcher at Kobe University for two years. Since 1997, The Institute of Rheological Mechanics of Hunan University has undertaken the key project of National Natural Science Foundation 1 (led by Professor Yuan) and the general project of National Natural Science Foundation 16 (led by Professor Zhang Ping, Professor Luo 3, Professor Yuan 4, Professor 1, Professor Long 1, Professor Xiao. The research contents include material failure theory of rheological objects with defects, cross-material level analysis of multi-field coupling in the process of polymer failure with defects, fracture theory of nonlinear viscoelastic materials, stress crazing of polymers, mechanical behavior and meso-mechanism of creep damage-failure of loaded polymers, accelerated characterization and meso-mechanism of nonlinear rheological behavior of loaded polymers, microstructure and mechanical behavior of polymer-inorganic nanocomposites, meso-mechanical study of equivalent viscoelastic continuous medium of nano-plastics, and mechanical properties and solidification characteristics of two-dimensional directionally solidified alloys. In addition, the development and application of Professor Zhang Ping's research group's "New Technology for Direct Preparation of Nylon 6- Silica Nanocomposites" received a horizontal grant of 500,000 yuan from sinopec group's "Research on Production Technology of Polyamide Inorganic Nanomaterials". Professor Ma Shicheng's research group applied rheology theory to the study of foundation pit excavation and subgrade settlement, and the total amount of horizontal project funds was more than 3 million yuan. Relying on these projects, the Institute of Rheological Mechanics has created considerable social and economic benefits, trained rheological professionals, and won the National Science and Technology Progress Award 1 item and provincial and ministerial awards 1 item (including the first prize1item, two second prizes and nine third prizes).

The research characteristics of rheological mechanics are embodied in interdisciplinary research. On the one hand, the research content is in the cross field of chemistry, mechanics and engineering science, and its research object is materials with complex deformation and fluidity, as well as physical and mechanical analysis of engineering and technological processes in industry and agriculture, which is interdisciplinary. On the other hand, Xiangtan University is a comprehensive university with a complete range of arts, science and engineering, and its discipline setting and academic atmosphere are conducive to interdisciplinary research. The research work includes the deformation and destruction process of metals and alloys, plastics, rubber, ceramics and other materials, the molding process of complex parts, the flow and deformation behavior of polymer materials, and the modernization of basic theories of traditional Chinese medicine such as human biological field and meridian induction. The disciplines involved are mechanics, chemistry, civil engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials, medicine and other disciplines.

The research direction of defect rheology with research characteristics has been recognized by international academic circles, funded by the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Science Foundation of the United States, and established cooperative research contacts and academic exchanges with some universities and research institutions in the United States, Britain, Germany, Japan, Australia and Poland, and was invited to give lectures to each other many times. 1996 the first national symposium on rheology of objects with defects was successfully held in our school, and 1997 the symposium on rheology of objects with defects was successfully held in China by the International Federation of theoretical and applied mechanics (IUTAM), which showed that academic circles at home and abroad recognized the rheology of objects with defects created by Chinese scholars. It is a world-leading work to establish the failure theory of rheological materials combining macro and micro, which has high academic value and wide application scope. He has published more than 0/00 papers and 6 monographs in domestic and foreign journals, including Introduction to Rheology, Rheology Mechanics, Rheology of Defects, Rheological Fracture, Material Failure Theory of Rheological Objects with Defects and Viscoelastic Fracture Mechanics. The related research work has been continuously funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (1 key project and 5 general projects), the National Natural Science Foundation of the United States and the Major Projects and Key Subjects Fund of Hunan Province. In March, 20001,the key project of the National Natural Science Foundation, Material Failure Theory of Rheological Objects with Defects, passed the project acceptance organized by the National Natural Science Foundation. The expert group believes that the research group's achievements are innovative and at the forefront of the international research on the failure mechanics of rheological objects with defects, which not only has important basic theoretical significance, but also has broad application prospects. Some achievements have reached the international advanced level, and the comprehensive evaluation is excellent. 2. In the aspect of application, it pays attention to the combination with engineering problems that play an important role in national economic construction and national defense construction. The representative results are as follows: (1). The theory is applied to the reinforcement of the concrete dam of Zhexi hydropower station in Hunan Province, and the dam remains intact after more than ten years of operation. Through ministerial appraisal, the design theory is considered to be excellent, so it won the Top Ten Scientific and Technological Achievements Award of Hunan Province in 1988, the first prize of scientific and technological progress of the Hydropower Planning and Design Institute of the Ministry of Energy (SG8903-S2), the second prize of scientific and technological progress of the Ministry of Water Resources (S902004-G4) and the third prize of national scientific and technological progress (Shui -3-00S-04). (2) Study on the thermo-mechanical failure mechanism of materials. The research on the thermal-mechanical failure mechanism of high-power laser has clear national defense significance and industrial application value, and the research on the failure mechanism of high-power laser plays an important role in the development of high-energy laser weapons. The related research has been supported by many national natural science funds, and its achievements have won the first prize of China Academy of Sciences [Duan Zhuping (1) and Zhou Yichun (2)] and other four provincial and ministerial awards. 3. Related research is mainly in the fields of nano-materials and technology, laser technology, thermal barrier coating and advanced processing and molding technology. Professor Zhou Yichun's research on laser thermal shock and coating group nickel deep-drawing steel strip project passed the project appraisal organized by the Ministry of Education and reached the international advanced level. Professor Zhang Ping's research group and Professor Wang's research group cooperated in polymer nanocomposites and prepared several new materials. The strength and impact toughness of liquid crystal reinforced and toughened epoxy resin are improved by more than 30%, and the strength and impact toughness of nylon-silica nanocomposites are improved by more than 80% and 30% respectively. The project "New Technology for Direct Preparation of Nylon 6- Silica Nanocomposites in Situ" passed the project appraisal organized by the Ministry of Education and reached the international advanced level. Further research has been extended from the study of polymer nanocomposites to the study of nanorheology. This research is supported by the National 863 Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education and key projects in Hunan Province. In the future construction, we will continue to focus on rheological research and interdisciplinary research, focusing on material failure mechanics with defective rheological objects, carrying forward the original research characteristics, and strengthening interdisciplinary research with polymer science, computational mathematics and condensed matter physics. And continue to attach importance to the research on key mechanical problems of manufacturing technology and national security, which is closely combined with engineering application. And continue to attach importance to the study of physical and mechanical problems related to new materials, and make contributions to national economic construction. After five years, it has been built into a discipline with certain characteristics and influence in the world.
