Two professors from Wuhan University of Science and Technology obtained patents for AIDS treatment. Does this mean that HIV can be completely cured?

Recently, Professor Zhang Tongcun and Professor Gu from School of Life Science and Health, Wuhan University of Science and Technology.

Obtained the patent certificate of invention in China National Intellectual Property Administration with the title of "Construction and application of chimeric antigen receptor recombinant gene for treating HIV (HIV) infection". At present, this method has treated two AIDS patients. 1 case was treated for 3 months, and the HIV index decreased rapidly. One case was treated for 9 months and completely cleared of HIV. "This patent creatively develops a new method to treat' CAR-T', which can kill cells infected with HIV." Professor Volschi DJ, an expert on AIDS research, commented.

Professor Zhang Tongcun and Professor Gu used CAR-T to treat AIDS. First, they collected patients' blood, isolated T cells, redesigned CAR-T cells in vitro by means of genetic engineering, expanded them to billions and billions, and then returned them to patients. CAR-T cells can specifically recognize and destroy HIV-infected cells in vivo, neutralize HIV in blood, and can be used in combination with anti-HIV drugs.

Professor Zhang Tongcun is one of the earliest scholars engaged in CAR-T research and clinical treatment in China, and Professor Gu has been engaged in HIV research for more than ten years. Three years ago, they joined hands to study "CAR-T for AIDS treatment".

They completed the clinical registration of CAR-T for AIDS treatment in the International Clinical Trial Registration Center on 20 17 and 10 respectively, and conducted clinical research trials in human. At present, two AIDS patients have been treated. 1 case was treated for 3 months, and the HIV index decreased rapidly. One case was treated for 9 months and completely cleared of HIV. Clinical studies have proved that CAR-T can not only neutralize HIV in blood, but also kill dormant cells infected with HIV.
