Heart bypass surgery is a cardiac surgery that uses your own blood vessels to bypass severely damaged, narrowed, or occluded coronary blood vessels from the aorta across the stenotic area to the distal end. The blood vessel thus bridged acts like a bridge, ensuring that there is still sufficient blood flow despite severe damage to the myocardium distal to the coronary vessel. This is called cardiac bypass surgery.
