Patent barrier of at gearbox

For a long time, we have been emphasizing that the most important task of independent brands is to establish their own core technologies on the basis of ensuring product quality, especially the adjustment of engines, gearboxes and chassis. Among them, automatic gearbox is a very important aspect. In recent years, although we have seen that some domestic third-party suppliers, such as Sheng Rui and dongan power, have introduced 6-speed and 8-speed automatic manual transmissions at the manufacturer level, that is, 6AT and 8AT transmissions, especially the first-line independent brands such as Geely, Changan and Great Wall, when introducing their own automatic transmissions, the basic trend is to face dual-clutch transmissions. We see that in some low-level products, these three gearboxes.

As we all know, in the current automatic gearbox, the dual clutch gearbox should be regarded as the end of the contempt chain. As we all know, the frustration and small torque of dual-clutch gearbox are obvious shortcomings. From the experience, the overall performance of automatic manual transmission (AT) and continuously variable transmission (CVT) is better than that of dual clutch transmission. This is why the high-end models of Geely, Chang 'an and Great Wall are basically equipped with Aisin's 6AT, 8AT and ZF 8AT. In fact, the manufacturers themselves understand that the 6AT and 8AT of Aisin and ZF represent a kind of progress, so putting them on their own products is an improvement of product strength.

So why don't independent brand manufacturers use the 6AT and 8AT gearboxes of Aisin and ZF on most models? Or why don't independent brands develop in gearboxes and CVT? The first is the first question. Although 6AT and 8AT gearboxes have higher maturity, stronger products and better experience, the procurement cost of gearboxes of these two brands is high, and Aisin is relatively cheap, but the overall price is also very expensive. Think about it, 70,000-80,000 domestic cars, equipped with 6AT and 8AT gearboxes of Aisin and ZF, the result is that other configurations will be greatly discounted, or

The second question, in fact, AT present, the most mature technologies and patents of AT gearboxes in the world are basically concentrated in the hands of two manufacturers, Aisin and ZF. Then there is the patent as a technical blank, and it is basically impossible for independent brands to reverse develop AT gearboxes through imitation and replication. The situation of CVT gearbox is even worse. Although CVT gearbox is cheaper than mature AT gearbox, at present, only Bosch and Schaeffler in Germany can produce the transmission steel belt, the core component of CVT gearbox. Therefore, it is very difficult for independent brands to develop AT gearboxes and CVT gearboxes. Even if it is barely developed, its maturity and experience are relatively poor.

However, independent brands must have their own automatic gearboxes, otherwise, once the cooperation breaks down or other reasons cause suppliers to compress or interrupt the supply of independent brands, the impact on independent brands is very great. Therefore, for the sake of "safety" of the market and products, independent brands must realize self-production and self-research of core components such as engines and gearboxes on some low-priced and high-equipped models!

So why can the dual-clutch gearbox become the "savior" of its own brand in the gearbox field? In fact, we see that brands such as Volkswagen and GM have dual-clutch gearboxes, and of course suppliers such as Getrag also have dual-clutch gearboxes. As mentioned earlier, many independent brands also have their own dual-clutch gearboxes. So why is there no patent barrier and technical gap like AT gearbox and CVT gearbox at the level of dual clutch gearbox?

In fact, an example can be understood. Think about it. What systems do mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO and Yijia use? Yes, they all use Android. Based on the native Android system, these vendors have their own characteristics when the system is displayed at the front end through post-design. Why are so many domestic and foreign manufacturers able to use the Android system and carry out secondary development on the technology of the native Android system? The reason is that Android is open source, which means that the source code is open and everyone can use it for post-development.

The same is true for dual clutch gearboxes. In fact, the structure and basic principle of the dual-clutch gearbox are the same, but the underlying technology of the dual-clutch gearbox is not in the hands of one manufacturer, so it actually means "open source". In this case, the underlying technology of the dual clutch gearbox is actually open. Under such circumstances, independent brand manufacturers can readjust and re-develop the "original" dual clutch technology. Of course, the most important thing is that the underlying technology of the dual-clutch gearbox itself is relatively simple, and there is no possibility of patent monopoly.

Therefore, independent brands should have their own automatic gearboxes, so it is difficult to break through the technical and patent barriers of AT gearboxes and CVT gearboxes, and only a relatively easy dual-clutch gearbox can be added, but despite this, the natural shortcomings of dual-clutch gearboxes have not been completely overcome! Therefore, in the long run, as long as it is still in the era of fuel vehicles, AT gearboxes and CVT gearboxes are more worthy of research and development by independent brand manufacturers!
