Hou Chaohuan is a famous expert in information, signal processing and acoustics in China, an academician of China Academy of Sciences, director of Information Science Department of National Nature Conservation Foundation, researcher, deputy director and doctoral supervisor of Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In addition, he also served as the vice chairman of the Chinese Acoustics Society and the vice chairman of the Signal Processing Society.

In the research of underwater acoustic engineering, Hou Chaohuan presided over the research of "Measurement System for Statistical Characteristics of Underwater Acoustic Signal Fluctuation", which promoted the research of underwater acoustic signal field, noise and reverberation field. A phase-shifted multi-beam array signal processing system is proposed, and its comprehensive analysis, theoretical calculation, parameter selection, optimal design and performance estimation are given. An intelligent underwater acoustic signal processing system is completed, which enables the system to match underwater acoustic signals and achieve the best working state and processing effect. After the system was successfully applied to engineering projects, it received remarkable social and economic benefits. According to the international requirements for ultra-high speed computing, Hou Chaohuan began the research on parallel array processing in 1980s, and then integrated the parallel processing system into a single chip. The research of VLSl signal processing was first conducted in China.
