An international application can produce an international application date, and the applicant can specify some (even all) PCT member countries in its application. An international application shall have the effect of a formal national application in each designated country from the date of international application. PCT member countries are members of some regional patent treaties, and can also have the effect of regional patent applications. The member countries of the regional patent system established by Harare Agreement, Eurasian Patent Convention and European Patent Convention can "close the access to national patent protection", that is, the international application designating the member country can be automatically regarded as a regional (ARIPO, Eurasian or European) patent application and handled by their respective regional patent offices.
