Why doesn't Qualcomm make mobile phones, and Huawei Xiaomi gives it 30 billion yuan every year?

In the field of high-end chips, Qualcomm is basically a monopoly enterprise. This is not just our country, it is global. Due to technical limitations, most mobile phone manufacturers cannot produce high-end chips. Only Apple, Samsung and Huawei can produce high-end chips. However, in order to protect their core competitiveness, neither Apple nor Huawei sells chips. In terms of stability and quality, neither Apple nor Huawei can compete with Qualcomm's chips.

In terms of communication patents, high schools have 3,900 CDMA patents. Among them, there are more than 600 core patents. In the standard patents of 5G network, Huawei, ZTE and other domestic mobile phone manufacturers also own about 20% of the patents, while Qualcomm only owns 15% of the patents, but some core technical fields are dominated by Qualcomm.

So the core technology is still in the hands of others. Huawei only has the right to speak. Qualcomm's 5G standard network patents have the dominance of core patents. This also means that domestic mobile phone manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi have to pay huge patent fees to Qualcomm every year. Using Qualcomm's 5G standard network patent, the utilization rate of single-mode mobile phone manufacturers is 2.25%, and that of multi-mode mobile phones is 3.25%. However, domestic mobile phone manufacturers are mostly all kinds of mobile phones. According to the average domestic mobile phone price of 2000 yuan, Qualcomm can extract 65 yuan for every mobile phone sold.

According to the shipment of 462 million domestic mobile phones in 20 17, Huawei Xiaomi and other domestic mobile phones have to pay at least 30 billion patent fees to Qualcomm every year. So Qualcomm is a real vampire company. In recent years, under the continuous accumulation of dissatisfaction of downstream manufacturers, there has been resistance. First of all, in 20 16, Meizu refused to pay Qualcomm a patent fee of up to 500 million yuan, and chose to cooperate with Samsung and MediaTek.

Huawei has to pay patent fees not only to Qualcomm, but also to Nokia in Finland, Wireless Planet in the United States, multinational companies in the United States and even Ericsson in Sweden. But now Samsung and Apple also need to pay royalties to China, which is not only an expense, but also an income. In fact, ZTE and Huawei fought a patent war several years ago, which lasted for several years. After mediation, the two sides withdrew the lawsuit, reconciled and stopped the patent war.

Actually, this is not the main reason. Huawei doesn't want to collect patent fees from domestic manufacturers. For example, Huawei once opened the patent of ultra-high-speed charging for free. Ren Zeng said that China needs a group of responsible national enterprises to go abroad. Perhaps Huawei wants to be a responsible enterprise, rather than collecting patent fees from the same domestic bank.
