Qualcomm and Huawei reached a patent price

Huawei is not only the top three smartphone manufacturers in terms of global shipments, but also one of the best communication equipment manufacturers. Especially in the past two years, the significant progress made by HiSilicon's self-developed chips has made Huawei's core competitiveness more stable and powerful.

On July 30th, Qualcomm announced that it had formally reached a new patent cooperation agreement with Huawei, but did not disclose the specific content, only that Huawei would pay about 654.38+08 billion US dollars to Qualcomm. At the same time, the patent licensing dispute between Qualcomm and Huawei was resolved as scheduled, and the relationship between the two sides was formally eased.

This is actually very similar to the reconciliation between Qualcomm and Apple. Last year, Qualcomm and Apple also signed a similar patent agreement, and Apple paid Qualcomm a huge price of $4.5 billion. The former can successfully carry Qualcomm's 5G baseband chip on this year's iPhone 12 series.

Compared with Apple's $4.5 billion, Huawei's $6,543.8 +0.8 billion is obviously much less. This is probably related to Huawei's accumulated advantages in the patent technical standards of 5G networks. Qualcomm, as a manufacturer with many core technology patent standards for network technologies such as 3G and 4G, almost no smartphone manufacturer can get rid of Qualcomm's "talons".

Regarding the reconciliation between Qualcomm and Huawei, Qualcomm said: "After signing the agreement with Huawei, we have now entered a period of signing multi-year licensing agreements with major mobile phone OEMs." For Huawei, it means that Qualcomm may become a supplier of Huawei's 5G chips in the future, and some problems on Huawei's high-end mobile phone chips will be solved.

However, from now on, even if Huawei and Qualcomm formally reconciled and paid a price of $654.38+0.8 billion, they are still prohibited from buying Qualcomm chips, and Qualcomm can do nothing about it. It is understood that this US$ 654.38+US$ 80 million was used by Huawei to pay the unpaid patent license fee, and Qualcomm also resumed paying the license fee for wireless technology.

These changes have now solved big problems for Huawei. At present, Huawei is in a very difficult situation, and many key technologies and chip components have been severely banned. Therefore, reaching a settlement with Qualcomm can obviously alleviate some of Huawei's pressure.
