Mondragon rifle (Spanish: Fusel mondragon) is three kinds of rifles designed by Mexican general Manuel mondragon. The first two rifles are bolt type (M 1893 and M 1894), and the third rifle lays the foundation for the semi-automatic Mondragon rifle (M 1908).
This is also the application of automatic loading in combat rifles. It is recognized as the first modern semi-automatic rifle in the world. The production date is 1908 to191year, and it has participated in Mexican revolution and War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, including World War I and World War II.

189 1 year, Manuel mondragon began to design rifles. While in Belgium, he submitted a patent application for this rifle, which was approved on May 23rd. 1892. On April 20th of the same year, the French Patent and Design Bureau also approved his application. On August 20th of the following year, his design patent was also approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
This rifle can be called M 1893 rifle, which is a bolt rifle. Using 6.5x48mm bullets (also designed by Manuel mondragon), the magazine can hold 6 bullets at a time. This gun has three settings, A is "automatic", L is "safe mode" and R is "rapid fire mode". In the "automatic" shooting mode, the shooter can manually pull the bolt back to the locked state after firing, which is similar to Winchester M 1897 pump-driven shotgun.
The bolt-type Mondragon rifle can have a bayonet seat, and a bayonet can be installed on the gun. The bayonet is 4 1cm long, weighs 575g, and the blade length is 28cm. No manufacturer in Mexico has the ability to make such complicated guns. Mondragon, with the support of Diaz, commissioned the Swiss Industrial Company (SIG) to produce.
SIG Company accepted the order of Monddragon on 1893, and produced 50 pieces. On 1894, Monddragon added another order of 200 pieces. 1894, this rifle is named M 1894 instead of using 5.2x68mm bullets (to distinguish it from the previous model using 6.5x48mm bullets). This model was designed by Swiss Colonel Edward Rubin.
Semiautomatic Mondragon rifle
Mondragon continued his design. 1on August 8, 904, he submitted a patent for a new rifle again, this time for automatic loading design. He received the patent approval of 1907 on May 4th. Mondragon M 1908 rifle is designed with air guide and bolt mechanism, and is equipped with spring and piston device. These designs are very common in modern times, but now they are very advanced designs.
Under the cooperation of two locking spiral grooves on the right side of the bolt and two locking convex bamboo shoots on the handle, the bolt is rotated counterclockwise or clockwise through the spiral action, thus achieving the locking purpose. There is a button on the bolt, which makes the bolt separate from the air guide system and become a bolt-pulling type.
The rifle is designed with a non-detachable magazine, which can be supplied in the form of five magazines and two magazines. Mondragon rifles can also be designed on bipeds. In addition to the previously designed rifle bayonet, mondragon also designed a shovel-shaped bayonet, and obtained a patent application on June 6, 2006.
Participate in war
World War I
19 14, the German Empire purchased as many as 3,600 mondragon semi-automatic rifles that were not sent to Mexico (obviously SIG had already completed the order before it was cancelled). The German Empire tried to transform this rifle into a 7.92×57 mm Mao Se (this ammunition was used until the end of World War II), but they failed.
This rifle began to be sent to the infantry unit for testing, where the Mondragon rifle was tested under real conditions, showing problems similar to the Canadian Russell III Bolt rifle with a simpler structure, that is, its reliability was not high. The Royal German Air Force decided to adopt this rifle and equip each crew with two Mondragon rifles. This is a great progress for pilots equipped with German Mao Se M 1898 and Ruegle pistols.
In order to strengthen the continuity of firepower, the German military also developed 30 cartridges for this gun. The military used this weapon until machine guns equipped with firing interrupters were widely used. Only a few rifles survived during the war. The German navy uses some semi-automatic rifles from mondragon. The gun has complex structure, difficult maintenance and poor reliability. Later, it was replaced by Mao Se M 19 16 semi-automatic rifle.
