XDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW's patent xDrive sets a new standard in the sensitivity of all-wheel drive. Its job is to quickly change the torque distribution of the front and rear axles to provide real driving stability, driving pleasure and safety performance. XDrive can be completely adjusted and changed infinitely. It will calculate the situation of understeer or oversteer when turning, and provide the most suitable torque for the required axle at any time.
The core technology of xDrive all-wheel drive system is the transfer case developed by Magna Steyr Company in Austria, which is used to continuously adjust the torque distribution. XDrive system constantly changes the torque distribution according to the road conditions, and transmits the required torque to the front and rear wheels, with the highest distribution ratio of 40: 60.
During driving, if the system finds that the vehicle may understeer, that is, the front wheel begins to be dragged to the outside of the curve, it will reduce the torque distributed to the front axle and transfer almost all the power to the rear axle. The system also continuously exchanges information with the dynamic stability system DSC, so that wheel slip can be identified from the beginning. Once the wheel slips, the motor will lock the diaphragm clutch of xDrive, which will make the wheel have better adhesion through extra driving torque, and the idling wheel will also be effectively controlled by the brake device. This means that no matter how suddenly the road surface changes, the right amount of torque will be transmitted to the wheels with the best grip, even on the partially frozen road surface.
