Extended data:

Patent literature is the product of the patent system. Like the patent system, it has gone through a long development process, from the initial embryonic state to being published and widely disseminated, and finally becoming a publication that accounts for a quarter of the total number of books and periodicals published in the world every year.

Patent documents refer to inventions for which patents have been applied for or approved, that is, published or unpublished documents containing research, design, development and test results of discoveries, inventions, utility models and industrial designs, as well as documents (or abstracts) related to protecting the rights of inventors, patentees and holders of industrial designs and utility model registration certificates.

These materials are documents produced in the process of patent approval, some of which are published publicly, and some are just for archiving or copying.

Patent documents as public publications mainly include: patent application specification, patent specification, utility model specification, industrial design specification, patent bulletin, patent index, etc.

At present, about 160 countries and regions in the world have patent institutions and published patent information. Since 1980 the State Council approved the establishment of the patent office, China has published and distributed patent documents one after another. According to the different objects protected by the patent law, patent bulletins are divided into invention patent bulletins, utility model patent bulletins and design patent bulletins.

According to the degree of patent examination and approval, the instructions are divided into "disclosure instructions for patent application for invention", "examination instructions for patent application for invention" and "application instructions for patent for utility model".

1September 1992, People's Republic of China (PRC)'s patent law was revised again. According to the examination and approval procedure of the new law, the announcement procedure for examination and approval of an application for a patent for invention was cancelled, and the publication of the specification of a patent for invention and the specification of a patent for utility model was directly authorized instead.

China patent documents have the following forms: (1) patent specification (paper); (2) patent specification (microfilm), in which the microfilm type is arranged according to the document serial number and the microfilm type is arranged according to the international patent classification number; (3) China patent documents CD-ROM; (4) English abstract of China patent (computer disk); (5) Patent Bulletin and China Patent Index, etc. Among them, (3), (4) and (5) are the most commonly used retrieval tools for finding patents in China.
