Chinese name: methyl tert-butyl ether; Methyl tert-butyl ether; 2- methoxy-methylpropane; Tert-butyl methyl ether; 2- methyl -2- methoxypropane

English name: 2- methoxy -2- methylpropane; MTBE methyl tert-butyl ether; Tert-butyl methyl ether; Tert-butyl methyl ether

Description: Colorless low viscosity liquid. Melting point-109℃, boiling point 55.3℃, freezing point-108.6℃, relative density 0.7407(20/4℃) and refractive index 1.3694. Flash point (closed cup) -28℃, ignition point 460℃, explosion limit (in air) 1.65%-8.4% (by volume), vapor pressure (25℃)32.664kPa, critical pressure 3.43MPa, critical temperature 223.95℃, viscosity (20℃). It is miscible with gasoline and many organic solvents, slightly soluble in water, and can form a boiling mixture with some polar solvents such as water, methanol and ethanol. It has a terpene-like smell.

Production method: mixed butene and methanol are used as raw materials, and exothermic reaction is carried out in the presence of acidic catalyst. The representative processes are Hess in Germany and Snam Projiti in Italy. The new catalytic distillation process developed by American Chemical Research and Licensing Company and New Chemical Company has been applied in 198 1. In this method, a catalytic fixed bed reactor and a distillation column are combined in the same equipment, and the heat released by the reaction is used for the rectification and purification of methyl tert-butyl ether, thus reducing the process energy consumption.

Raw material consumption quota: methanol 36 1kg/t, isobutylene (100%) 650kg/t.

Usage: This product is mainly used as gasoline additive with excellent antiknock performance. Good miscibility with gasoline, less water absorption and no pollution to the environment. MTBE can improve the cold start characteristics and acceleration performance of gasoline, and has no adverse effect on gas resistance. Although the calorific value of methyl tert-butyl ether is low, the driving test shows that using gasoline COntaining 10%MTBE can reduce the fuel consumption by 7%, and obviously reduce the lead content and co content in the tail gas, especially the emission of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. As a raw material for organic synthesis, high-purity isobutylene can be prepared. It can also be used to produce 2- methacrolein, methacrylic acid and isoprene. In addition, it can also be used as analytical solvent and extractant.
