Is Professor Yuan Longping still cultivating rice?

Yuan Longping (Yuan Longping, 1930.9-) was born in De'an County, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, and was born in Beijing. The founder of hybrid rice research in my country, he is known as the "Father of Hybrid Rice", "Contemporary Shennong", "Rice God", etc. His father, Yuan Xinglie, graduated from the Chinese Department of Southeast University and is a typical Chinese intellectual. His mother, Hua Jing, is from Yangzhou. She studied in a British missionary school since she was a child and can speak fluent English. Yuan Longping was admitted to the Agricultural Department of Chongqing Xianghui College in August 1949. He graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953 and was assigned to teach at Anjiang Agricultural School in Hunan. He began hybrid rice research in 1964 and was transferred to the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1971. He was promoted to researcher and was named a national model worker. In 1995, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He is currently the director of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center.

Yuan Longping is a world-class agricultural scientist born and raised in China, the founder of China's hybrid rice research, and the first person in the world to successfully utilize the hybrid advantages of rice. Yuan Longping's achievements are mainly reflected in the research, application and promotion of hybrid rice:

In 1960, it was discovered that natural hybrid rice strains showed obvious hybrid vigor.

In 1964, he proposed the idea of ??utilizing the hybrid advantage of rice and started research on rice hybridization.

In 1973, he cooperated with others to realize the three-line matching of hybrid rice sterile line, maintainer line and restorer line, and bred strong dominant hybrid rice for the first time in the world.

In 1974, he broke through the difficulties in seed production and developed a set of indica hybrid rice production technology, which made China a world leader in hybrid rice research and became the first person in the world to successfully cultivate indica hybrid rice.

Between 1976 and 1987, the total planting area of ??hybrid rice he cultivated reached 1.1 billion acres, increasing rice production by 100 billion kilograms.

In 1979, hybrid rice was China’s first agricultural technology patent transferred to the United States.

Yuan Longping won the following honors for his outstanding contributions to hybrid rice scientific research:

In 1981, he won my country's first National Special Invention Award, the "National Highest Science and Technology Award."

In 1985, he won the “Outstanding Inventor” Gold Medal from the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization.

In 1987, he won the "Science Award" issued by UNESCO.

In 1988, he won the "Langk Foundation Award" from the British Langk Foundation.

In 1989, he was awarded the title of National Advanced Worker by the State Council.

In 1991, he was appointed as the chief international consultant of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

In 1993, he won the American Feinster Hunger Saving Award.

In 1995, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and received the "Medal of Honor for Food Security" issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Won the first "Nikkei Asia Technology Development Award" in 1996.

In 1997, he won the honorary title of "Pioneer Scientist" in Mexico.

Won the "Japan Koshihikari International Rice Award" in 1998.

In 1999, with the approval of the International Committee on Nomenclature of Small Objects, an asteroid discovered by the Schmidt CCD Asteroid Project Team of the Beijing Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was named "Yuan Longping Star".

Yuan Longping is the subject leader of the national high-tech "863" plan biotechnology. He has written papers such as "Key Technologies for Hybrid Rice Seed Production and High Yield" and "Practice and Theory of Hybrid Rice Breeding" , editor-in-chief of the book "Hybrid Rice". The hybrid rice he cultivated is called "Oriental Magic Rice", which ensures that our country can feed 22% of the world's population with only 7% of the world's land. The annual increase in rice production is equivalent to solving the problem of feeding 60 million people every year. He has two major wishes: one is to promote hybrid rice to the world, and the other is to make super hybrid rice a success to benefit all mankind.
